Upcycle: Wipes Container to Craft Storage

I have way too many wipe boxes lying around. I’m a little bit of a hoarder when it comes to possible craft supplies or DIY stuff, and the collection of wipe boxes was getting out of hand. If I could recycle wipe boxes for money the way people do aluminum cans, I would be in business. But, alas, no one buys wipe containers. I don’t know why- they are pretty handy. They have a lid that snaps closed, a little space in the middle for pulling out what’s inside, and they are made of hard plastic. They can definitely be used for something! A scrap of material and a few embellishments later, and I now have a new storage box for my washi tape collection that was spilling out of a mason jar. Today’s Upcycle: Wipes Container to Craft Storage

Supply List:

  • Empty wipes container
  • Fabric scrap (about the size of a fat quarter)
  • Mod Podge
  • Foam Sponge
  • Scissors
  • Pen
  • Ribbon or ric rac
  • Hot glue gun
  • Any other embellishments

First, like any other covering project, we have to come up with a pattern. The easiest way to do this is to start with the wipes container on the wrong side of a piece of fabric. Trace around the bottom. This helps you to always know where to place the wipes container after moving it in the next few steps.

Turn the wipes container so that the front portion is down. Trace this, as well. Don’t worry about it being perfect, but be careful not to trace it too small. We can cut off any excess material, if needed.

Return the wipes container to it’s place in the center. Continue tracing all the sides until you have a pattern like shown below. I’ve labeled the different sections to hopefully give a better visual.

Using a sponge, apply Mod Podge to the bottom of the wipes container. Press the fabric onto the glue. Continue this all the way around the wipes container.

For the sides, turn under a rough edge and glue over the opposite side. See below. Continue around all four corners.

Use scissors or a rotary cutter to remove any excess fabric around the top.

Hot glue a length of ribbon around the unfinished top edge of the fabric. Add any other embellishments.

Here are a few embellishment ideas:

  • Using the method above, trace a piece of fabric to cover the top small pop-up lid of the wipes container.
  • Add a decorative flower. I used a canvas one from Canvas Corp.
  • Glue on buttons or other small embellishments.

Altho we’re older we like to use wipes for personal cleanliness. We use the sensitive Pampers also. I keep containers all the time, who knows what you might need one for.
What you did to decorate your container is wonderful, pretty fabric. You did such a great job getting the fabric to fit. Not sure I could do that but I’d make some kind of effort. I use my containers for buttons, little things for my papercrafting, tapes, whatever the need is. It keeps so much plastic out of landfills and serves a wonderful need. Happy Easter
