My mother’s favorite past time is gardening and yard work. She has a green thumb that I did not inherit. Growing up, she tried to pass on her adored hobby to me, but I could never acquire a knack for it. Now that I have a house of my own, doing a bit of gardening and yard work is necessary, and she still brings me flowers to plant from time to time. One hurdle that my mother has overcame is her battle with rheumatoid arthritis. She keeps this condition well under control, but I know that it can be easily aggravated. Recently, she shared with me her go-to tips and items for still enjoying flower gardening while keeping aches and pains at bay.
- Extra Strength TYLENOL® – After a long afternoon of weeding and planting in her garden, my mom takes Extra Strength TYLENOL® to combat the minor aches and pains from bending and working. It helps her to get back to the things that she loves to do. Use only as directed.
- Ergonomic hand tools – Instead of purchasing cheap gardening tools, she invests in ergonomic ones that have handles that are easy to grip. The handles on these tools also tend to be more “cushy” to aid in hand comfort.
- Invest in a Kneeling Pad- Take the pressure off of knees with a well-cushioned gardening pad. Find one that has a removable cover for easy cleaning and a thick foam cushion for comfort.
- Choose an “easy” gardening apron- Body aches and pains can make it difficult to tie sashes or fasten hooks. When looking for a gardening apron, invest in one that does not tie around the neck but rather fastens on one side. Looks for longer waist ties that can be wrapped around and tied in the front or attaches via velcro on the sides.

I love gardening, but the aches and pains can definitely get the best of me. I have experienced some major back pain after gardening once so now I am careful about gardening. I love to plant flowers. I have to keep Tylenol on hand for all those aches & pains!
I totally need to invest in a gardening mat. My knees always kill me when I garden and I never remember until have to get down into the dirt. Great tips. Thank you so much.
If you have a sewing machine, an old pillow and a cheap vinyl table cloth you can make one .cut pillow the size you want, make a pillow case type cover stuff in the piece of pillow done
I sometimes work for long periods in the yard, so I’ve placed stone or wooden benches and chairs in various settings around the yard as ever-ready resting spots to use when I’ve been kneeling or standing too long. That way I don’t have to go back inside in dirty clothes and shoes if I want to return to my project after a short rest.
When I garden, I go all out. These are great tips to minimize the aches and pains I feel after an entire day outside in the dirt!
Great tips. I am sending this to my mom. She is an avid gardener but she does deal with lots of aches and pains too. Great tips for this time of the year. I am ready to garden!
I would love to do more gardening, but my knees don’t like to cooperate! Tylenol has been so effective for me and has saved me from uncomfortable times.
We’re not familiar with gardening since we don’t have a garden but these tools look handy and effective to minimize all the pain. I think it helps to have a nice massage after the hard chore.
My father and mother-in laws are avid gardeners…and they always complain how sore they are whenever they work for a long time!
I keep a lawn chair set up in my garage and a drink in the garage frig so I can rest periodically.
After a long day working in my yard, I personally make soaking in an epsom salt bath afterwards, at this time I can reflect on my accomplishments and think about what is next.
I always love the mini workout I get when gardening but at the start of the season I am left so sore. This is true for everyone I know too. I always forget to arm myself with pain reliever first.
I always have my wheel barrow nearby. Makes moving plants and pulled weeds much easier. Reduces the work load.
Tylenol taken daily or for long periods of time is very harmful to the body.
Using heat and ice packs, massage and organic natural pain relievers is far safer when aches and pains occur. Stay healthy to enjoy gardening longer.
Research the hazards of pain relievers.
I also do Pilates exercises which strengthens my thighs and helps to reduce the aches and pains.
