Tips for Cleaning a Microwave

All it takes is one good butter or BBQ explosion for the inside of a microwave to go from clean to gross. I’m spring cleaning a bit this week, and the microwave was one of the first appliances that I tackled. Here are my tips for cleaning a microwave.

Tips for Cleaning a Microwave

Step One: Clean the inside.

I use a mixture of vinegar and water to steam clean the inside. In a microwave-safe container or large measuring cup, mix one cup water and one cup vinegar. Place the container in the microwave and heat on high for 5-7 minutes. Let the container stay in the the microwave for 1 minute. Carefully remove the container, using oven mitts so as not to burn your hands. Use a cloth or sponge to wipe down the inside of the microwave. Don’t forget about the top of the microwave and the inside of the door!

These specialty microwave steam cleaners are popular. I’ve noticed them on social media, and they seem like a neat way to get the inside of the microwave clean. They would also make a fun Christmas gift for silly gift exchanges. There are a few different varieties, but they all appear to work the same way.

Step Two: Wash any removable portions.

My microwave has a turn table. I removed it and washed it in warm, soapy water. I let it dry thoroughly before placing it back in the microwave.

Step Three: Wipe down the outside of the microwave.

The method for this will depend on how your microwave is made. Our microwave is stainless steel, so we use stainless steel cleaner for the outside of the microwave. We also have an over-the-stove microwave, and it has a vent at the top of the microwave that collects dust and other gunk. I use a combination of a cloth and a pipe cleaner to get this portion clean.
