The Ruffled {Summer} Clutch

This clutch is a variation of the Pleated Summer Clutch that I shared on Monday. Most of the steps are the same, minus the pleats.

The Ruffled {Summer} Clutch
Skill Level: Intermediate Beginner
Materials Needed:
1 fat quarter for clutch outside
1 fat quarter for clutch lining
1 fabric length for ruffle- 3″ by 28″
Coordinating ribbon- 14″ in length
14×14 inch square of Peltex (a fusible fabric stabilizer)
Sewing machine
Scissors
Pins
Coordinating Thread
Ruler
2 Magnetic Snap Closures

Step One:
Cut a piece from the clutch outside fat quarter that is 14″x14″.

Cut a piece from the clutch lining fat quarter that is 14″x14″.

Cut a piece of Peltex that is 13 1/2″ by 13 1/2″. (I forgot to add this to the below picture…pretend like it is there ๐Ÿ™‚

Cut a ruffle strip that is 3″ by 28″.

Step two

Make the ruffle. If you have a serger, it’s your lucky day. Serge the long raw edges of the fabric strip and keep truckin’. If you do not have a serger, you’ll have to hem both of the long edges of fabric.

Use a long stitch and sew down the center of the fabric strip. Do NOT backstitch at either end. Pull the thread at the end to “gather” the fabric. For more information about gathering, see {this post}. Gather the strip until it is 14″ in length.

Pin the ruffle down the center of the outside of the clutch fabric. Stitch down the middle of the ruffle, over the gathering thread.

Pin the length of ribbon down the center of the ruffle. Stitch down each side of the ribbon.

Step Three

Following the manufacturer’s instructions, fuse the Peltex to the wrong side of the clutch fabric. Make sure that the Peltex is 1/2″ shorter on each side than the fabric. See {this post} for tips on working with Peltex.

Step Four

Attach the “socket” half of the magnetic snaps to the outside of the clutch fabric according to the manufacturer’s instructions of whatever snap that you purchased. Each snap should be 1 1/2 inches from the bottom raw fabric edge and about 1/2″ from the ruffle on each side.

Step Five

Attach the other half of the snap to the outside of the lining fabric. Each snap should be 1 1/2 inches from the bottom raw fabric edge.ย  Measure your clutch snaps that you did in Step Four to get the exact location that these should be side to side.

Since the lining fabric does not have Peltex on it, I recommend placing a small piece of remnant Peltex or an interfacing on the back of the snap for added support.

Step Six

Place the clutch fabric and lining right sides together. Make sure the snaps are at opposite ends. Pin. Sew at a 3/8″ seam allowance, making sure that the Peltex is not caught in the seam. I rounded the edges of mine. Leave a 3″ opening for turning.

Step Seven

Clip corners and trim seams. Turn right side out. Fold under the raw edges of the opening and pin.

Step Eight

Topstitch all the way around the clutch, making sure to sew the opening closed.

Step Nine

Fold the bottom half of the clutch upwards. Fold the top half down so that the magnetic snaps meet. Play around with this until you feel like the clutch bottom fold is at a good, natural place and pin the BOTTOM PART only in place.ย

Step Ten

Sew the bottom half of the clutch on both sides (not the folded part) to attach it to the clutch middle. Backstitch a few times at the beginning and end of the stitch line.

This one’s really cute too. I love the ruffle. I was considering making a clutch, but hadn’t thought about using two magnets instead of one. Thanks for that good tip!
