Are you ready for the easiest skirt tutorial ever?? Introducing, the Country Chic Skirt- Spring Edition.
Skill level: Beginner
Materials needed:
- Β Sewing machine and coordinating thread
- Scissors
- 1 denim skirt in your toddler’s size
- 1 skirt or dress with a finished hem
- Straight pins
- A super cute little model!!
This skirt was born when my mother-in-law gave me a few items for Princess. The denim skirt had a front split it in that needed some work. However, from previous experiences, I know that splits in the front seldom stay the way they are supposed to- the usually tear more with playing and wear. No telling what a toddler could do it it. So I knew that I wanted the split part gone for good.
She had given me another dress that was great on my daughter in length, but too big around the chest and under the arms. My solution? The Country Chic Skirt.
Β
Step One
Begin by cutting off the bottom of the denim skirt. I cut mine off at the top of the split- it was about six inches. Measure the amount that was cut off the denim skirt.
Cut the same amount off the patterned dress (6 inches). Make sure that you’re cutting off the bottom of the dress. This way, you’ll already have a built-in hem and will save yourself an extra step.
Step Two
Measure the length of the patterned fabric. The goal is to have the patterned fabric the same length around as the denim skirt. If the two skirts matched in length around, then you can skip this step. If the patterned fabric is bigger, then you’ll need make it fit.
The best way to do this (it also creates a little ruffle!) is to gather the patterned fabric. I did a thorough post about gathering a few months back, so click {HERE} to get a refresher course on gathering fabric.
Step Three
Once the patterned fabric has been gathered to the same length around as the denim skirt, it’s time to sew it in place. Make sure the right sides are together and pin all the way around. If there are seams on the patterned fabric and the denim skirt, make sure that they match up to look more uniform.
Step Four
Using a 1/2 inch seam allowance, stitch the two pieces together. Backstitch to secure. Iron the seam so that the patterned fabric is downward.
I love this for giving new life to items that do not fit just right! This is also a super easy way for beginners to earn sewing confidence. Let me know if you try it!
so cute and so easy! love it!

Thanks so much!
Hi Melanie that is so cute. It sure looks easy to do. My girls wear a lot of skirts so I need to learn how to do this. My girls are 9 and 13 so I think it can work right?. Thanks for showing step by step instruction.
