Thanks for a Great Year Gift and Printable

Are you still searching for an easy end of year school gift for teachers? My kids gave out these mason jar flowers this year to their teachers. We try to do a little something for all of their teachers, including their specials teachers (art, music, etc.). I’m also on a mission to repurpose and use all of the craft supplies that I have around the house rather than purchasing new. This “Thanks for a Great Year” Mason Jar Flower gift was born from this.

I purposely made the gift tag non-specific so that it may be used for any gift giving occasion where a learning or teaching year has came to a close. This way, it may be used for a sporting team coach, a music lesson teacher, an AWANA leader, or any other teacher or leader.

Supplies:

  • Mason jar
  • Chalky finish paint – I’m using the DecoArt Chalky Finish Paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Potting soil
  • Small annual flower
  • Twine
  • Fine grit sand paper
  • White card stock
  • Scissors
  • Single hole punch
  • Work table covering

Place the mason jar upside down on the work table. Use the paint brush to cover the outside of the jar with the chalky finish paint. Let the paint dry completely. Apply another coat of chalky finish paint. Let dry completely. Evaluate the jar. If it has good coverage, then another coat is not needed. If there are sparse places on the jar, apply one more coat of paint and allow to dry completely.

Allow the paint to cure for at least 24 hours. This may vary according to the weather and humidity where you live. The paint should be smooth and dry to the touch.

If you do not like the chippy paint finish on the jar, skip this step. Rub the sand paper over the jar to create a random chippy finish look. There is no exact science to this. It can look as rustic or as polished as you would like.

Pour potting soil in the jar and plant the flower. Water it with a few drops of water.

Print the free “Thanks for a Great Year” printable tag by clicking the THIS LINK and printing the gift tags with your home printer. Each sheet contains 6 gift tags.

Cut the gift tag out with scissors. Use the hole punch to create a hole in the top.

Cut a length of twine. Wrap the twine around the top of the jar. Thread the gift tag onto the twine. Tie a bow or knot to secure the tag.

Gift to your favorite teacher, coach, or leader.
