Super Sour Cupcakes

This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions, recipes, and Super Sour Cupcakes are totally my own.#CollectiveBias

Ever since my husband started giving my daughter candy a few years ago, she has had a sweet tooth (or is it a sour tooth?) for any candy that is super sour. There’s not a sour flavor that she doesn’t like. Mike and Ike candies have always been one of her favorites, so I’m not surprised that she is hooked on the Mike and Ike ZOURS variety. We save them for special occasions, such as parties or for movie snacks. They come in a convenient little box, so they are easy to store and have on hand to sneak in the movies– I mean, have for home movie nights. She likes sour flavors so much that I’ve been concocting other sour treats for her. These Super Sour Cupcakes were given the thumbs up by my daughter and a few other teenage taste testers. Perfect for a fun, sour themed party, Super Sour Cupcakes only take a few ingredients and their flavors are coordinated to pair with Mike and Ike ZOURS candies.

Ingredients:

  • 1 box of white cake mix
  • Eggs, water, and oil as directed by cake mix box
  • Powdered drink mix in 3 varieties: Watermelon, Green Apple, and Blueberry
  • Frosting (either 2 cans of frosting or 3 cups homemade is fine)
  • 1 box Mike and Ike ZOURS candies

Prepare the cake mix as directed on the box. Evenly divide the batter between three bowls.

In each bowl of batter, add 1/2 tsp. of one variety of powdered drink mix. In other words, add 1/2 tsp. Watermelon powdered drink mix to one bowl of batter, 1/2 tsp. Green Apple powdered drink mix to another bowl of batter, and 1/2 tsp. Blueberry powdered drink mix to the last bowl of batter.

Bake as directed on the cake mix box.

Let the cupcakes cool.

Dive the frosting evenly into three bowls. Add 1/2 tsp. powdered drink mix to each bowl (one variety in each bowl).

Place the frosting in a sandwich bag and clip a corner to make a frosting piping bag. Frost the super sour icing onto the cupcakes!

Top with Mike and Ike ZOURS candies!

Mike and Ike ZOURS are only ninety eight cents at Walmart! I had fun attending a demo there, but the Mike and Ike ZOURS can also be found on the candy aisle.

Mike and Ike ZOURS are great as a topping to Super Sour Cupcakes, but they are also excellent by themselves. Watch out for that #ZoursFace! Here’s ours that we shared on Instagram this week.

    Melanie,

I love the clever idea to pair the cupcakes with the Zoursยฎ flavor! Adding a flavored drink mix powder into the cupcake mix to pair with a matching Zoursยฎ flavor is definitely something I’ll be trying this weekend! #client
