I’ve been sharing how I made items that I included in the Happy Hour Projects Christmas in July Gift Exchange. Many of the items are kitchen related, like this Ruffle Oven Mitt!
How girlie, right? Do you know someone who would be excited to receive this as a holiday gift? Here’s how you can make your own.
Supplies:
- Fabric for outer side
- Fabric for lining
- Thread
- Scissors
- Sewing Machine
- COTTON Batting (not polyester- it will not hold up to the heat)
- Fabric for outer ruffle
- Fabric for inner ruffle
- Iron on Hem Tape
- Oven Mitt Pattern
Begin by printing the oven mitt pattern, or by making your own. I simply traced one of my current KitchenAid mitts that I really liked.
This works best if you cut large squares of lining, outer fabric, and batting, and baste them together. My “fabric sandwich” looked like this:
- Lining Fabric
- One layer of batting
- One layer of batting
- One layer of batting
- Outer Fabric
You will need two of these “sandwiches”.
Quilt by sewing at 1″ intervals down the length of each sandwich.
After quilting, use the oven mitt pattern to cut out two oven mitt shapes from the quilted rectangles. Lay these aside.
Cut four strips of fabric for outer ruffle that measure 2″ by 15″ each.
Cut four strips of fabric for inner ruffle that measure 3″ by 15″ each. The following pictures show both the outer and inner ruffle strips being assembled.
Place two of the outer ruffle strips, right sides together, and sew down the long edges. Turn the ruffle piece inside out.
Iron flat. Topstitch down the two long edges.
Place two of the inner ruffle strips, right sides together, and sew down the long edges. Turn the ruffle piece inside out. Iron flat. Topstitch down the two long edges.
Place one outer ruffle strip on top of an inner ruffle strip and pin.
Sew a long basting stitch down the center of the ruffle piece. Use the thread to draw the fabric into a ruffle, matching the length with the width of the mitt. For more information on “Gathering” to form ruffles, see {This Post}.
Pin in place. Sew down the center of the ruffle, securing it to the mitt piece.
Repeat the above steps for the remaining fabric to make the other side of the oven mitt.
Now we will make a loop. Cut a piece of fabric 3″ by 4″.
Fold it in half lengthwise. Press.
Open the fabric up and fold the raw edges in to meet the fold.
Fold the fabric in half again along the pressed line. Iron.
Pin and sew down both long edges.
Place the two completed mitt sections, right sides together. Be sure to insert the loop on the inside, placing it where you would like it but making sure that it will be caught by the stitching. See below picture)
Sew with a 1/2″ seam allowance. Due to the amount of layers, go slowly. You may even need to start with a fresh, sharp needle.
Turn the mitt right side out. Using the Iron on Hem Tape, cover the raw edge of the mitt all the way around on BOTH SIDES. The iron on side of the tape should be together. Iron so that the tape sticks together, sealing the raw edges inside.
Done~ A Super girlie Ruffle Oven Mitt for the holidays! Do you know someone who would like this as a handmade Christmas gift?

Hi Melanie, so I found your blog via Mom’s test Kitchen, and I am glad I did!!! It is so much fun and I love the DIY items! I can’t wait to make my own oven mitt!!! It will be pink 🙂
I’ve thought about making oven mitts but I never knew what kind of batting to use! Thanks for the tutorial!
You are very welcome! You can also use 1 layer of Insul-Bright (a heat resistant material used in between oven mitts, etc), but I had cotton batting on hand, so a few layers of that is good!!
Great tutorial – very pretty!
Thanks so much for posting this. I’ve definitely thought of making them before, but I never knew what to do about heat resistance. This is great.
Great tutorial!! Great job and so cute!
