Welcome to Episode 264 of “Melanie Crafts with Items in her Craft Room.” Cleaning out a craft room takes much longer when pausing every little bit to make things with the items I find, but it is also much more fun! I assembled this Tea Light Holder at a booth at Haven Conference a few years ago, but I had not painted it. I like the clean lines of geometric shapes when painting, and painter’s tape works great for creating these clean lines.
Supplies for a Painted Tea Light Holder:
- Wood tea light holder – I assembled this specific one at a conference and did not purchase it. This flower wood tea light holder is cute, and this heart tea light holder would be great for a variety of occasions.
- Blue painter’s tape
- Paintbrush
- Paint – For small decor projects like this, I prefer to use DecoArt Americana Decor Outdoor Living paint. Even for items that are not going outdoors, I like the durability of this specific variety of paint. All three colors of paint that I’m using in this project are of the DecoArt Americana Decor Outdoor Living paint.
Apply the painter’s tape to the surface of the wood tea light holder. Get creative in how you would like to create the clean lines on your project. Try horizontal lines, vertical lines, diagonal lines, triangles, or applying small torn pieces to the wood surface.
Use the paintbrush to apply the paint to the exposed portion.
Allow the paint to dry. Remove the painter’s tape. Allow the paint to cure for 24-48 hours. Apply painter’s tape to cover the painted portions so that the new color does not bleed or run over the portions that are already painted.
Paint, allow to dry, and remove tape.
If desired, paint the bottom and allow to cure completely for 48 hours (or other time as directed on paint instructions) before placing on a surface to use.
Here are a few other projects made with items in my craft room. Try one or two of these!
