Painted Birdhouse Project for VBS

I remember my first VBS when I was 5 years old. I made a painted magnet with a ladybug on it. I still have the magnet in my keepsake box in my night stand. My husband attended several vacation Bible schools “back in the day” where the older students actually did wood working projects. He has a wooden bird house and a decorative well that he made at VBS events when he was just a kid. The decorative well is two feet tall!

While foam and paper crafts are great for smaller kids, in our experience, older kids need a little bit more of a challenge when it comes to crafting. A project that can be spread over the span of several nights is even better. Building birdhouses from scratch would be fun, but not every church has someone who can lead that sort of activity. By using a bird house kit, students can still experience assembling and decorating a bird house without pulling out the hammer and nails.

These bird house kits are from Oriental Trading. Find them and other VBS supplies on their website. When the describing the steps below, I have them broken up into nights for those who have a multi-night VBS.

Supplies:

Bird house kits
Paint (if making these for outdoor use, purchase paint that is made for outdoor purposes)
Paintbrushes
Wood glue
Optional: Temporary tattoos, also found at Oriental Trading

Class One

Each bird house kit comes with pre-cut pieces and an instruction paper.

Have the children assemble the bird house according to the directions.

Apply wood glue to the joints and set them aside to dry.

Class Two

Paint the bird house. Set aside to dry overnight.

Class Three (Optional)

A temporary tattoo is a neat way to add fine detail to a project without having a detailed vinyl cut out. Follow the instructions to adhere the temporary tattoo to the bird house just as you would to a hand.
