Confession: I highly dislike ricotta cheese. It borderlines hate. Seriously. Ricotta cheese has this strange texture that gives me the heebie jeebies. I typically bypass any stuffed shells recipe because so many of them call for ricotta cheese. Yet I’ve always wanted to make a pasta dinner with stuffed shells. They look so cute! When I ran across this Mezzetta® Napa Valley Homemade™ Marinara sauce, I decided to combine it with shells and a protein for a No Ricotta Stuffed Marinara Shells recipe! It’s what we had for dinner tonight, and it was delicious!
- 1/2 box of jumbo shells
- 1 lb. chicken
- 1 jar of Mezzetta® Napa Valley Homemade™ Marinara sauce
- 8 ounce bag of shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/4 cup plain bread crumbs
- 1 egg, beaten
- 1 small onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- Olive oil
Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
Cook 1/2 box of jumbo shells according to the box directions. Cook them for 9-10 minutes. Drain them and set them aside to cool.
While the pasta cooks, cook chicken, onion, and garlic over medium heat in olive oil. Cook until the chicken is cooked through. If using chicken breasts or strips, shred the chicken after it has been cooked.
Beat the egg. Combine the egg, bread crumbs, and cheese in a large bowl.
After draining any leftover oil from the chicken mixture, combine the chicken mixture with the cheese mixture.
Pour just enough Mezzetta® Napa Valley Homemade™ Marinara sauce on the bottom of a 9×13 pan to cover the bottom of the pan.
Stuff the mixture into the shells. Place the shells in the pan. Cover the shells with the remainder of the Mezzetta® Napa Valley Homemade™ Marinara sauce.
Place the pan in the oven and cook for 15-20 minutes.

This looks super yummy! I actually love ricotta, but have you tried cottage cheese instead? It’s SOOO yummy in lasagna or stuffed shells and not grainy like ricotta ;o)
Yeah, I can’t do cottage cheese either! I’m just odd that way! 🙂
