Through a series of unfortunate events, my daughter had a mediocre birthday last year. She only requested two things: take-out from a favorite local chicken place and a hike up a local mountain. The chicken restaurant literally ran out of food while we were standing in line to order. A huge thunderstorm sprouted out of no where and ruined her hike. She was disappointed, and even shed a few tears, but in the end she handled it like a champ. Of course, her dad did what all dads of daddy’s girls do– he promised her a better birthday for the upcoming year. I’ve been cautiously awaiting her birthday request, and, luckily, it’s one that’s pretty easy to deliver: a Movie Night birthday party.
A Movie Night Birthday Party is about as simple as homemade birthday parties get. Order a few pizzas, watch her favorite flick, and make sure a group of tween girls behave themselves. We’ll make a few decorations, and my new Cricut tools arrived just in time to get a jump on a few practice crafts. Today I’m using the new Cricut Perforation Blade, Wavy Blade, Engraving Tip, and Debossing Tip to make a variety of projects that are perfect for a movie night at home or a movie night birthday party.
The Perforation Blade, Wavy Blade, Engraving Tip, and Debossing Tip are all a part of the Adaptive Tool System, designed specifically for the Cricut Maker machine. The Adaptive Tool System allows the machine to offer 10x the pressure in comparison to the previous machine models in addition to allowing the user to switch out a variety of tools. The sophisticated steering system of the Cricut Maker allows the machine to control the direction of the blade, increasing the preciseness of each cut. Cricut is constantly expanding the amount of tools for use with the Cricut Maker, thus delivering on their promise of versatility with the machine. The Cricut Maker will check to see if I am using the correct blade for the project before it begins cutting. If I am not, then it prompts to change the tool. I like how it makes using all of the different tools easy. The tools that I’m showcasing today allow users to engrave and deboss, as well as work with new materials like metal and leather.
Each of these new tools (the Perforation Blade, Wavy Blade, Engraving Tip, and Debossing Tip) are all a part of the Cricut Maker’s QuickSwap Suite. This means that instead of purchasing the entire housing for each tool, users may purchase only the blade or tip portion. Simply press the button at the top of the housing to quickly switch between tips for the project.
The basic steps for using the new blades are easy:
- Create your project in Design Space. Change any image or shape into the desired line type by selecting an image and then the appropriate line type.
- Select your material. The list of compatible materials will be limited to materials that have qualified for usage with each particular tool.
- Follow the on screen prompts. When prompted, attach the appropriate tip to the QuickSwap Housing. Then insert it into Clamp B and continue.
The Perforation Blade
The Perforation Blade does exactly as it sounds. It creates perfect tear-offs and easy peel-aways for paper, card stock, acetate, poster board, and other similar materials. A movie night would not be complete with a movie ticket, and the Cricut Perforation Blade was the perforation solution for our DIY at-home movie tickets.
Supplies:
- Cricut Maker
- Cricut Perforation Blade
- Cricut Fine Point Cutting Blade
- Cricut Light Grip Cutting Mat
- Cricut 0.4 Tip Pen
- White card stock
To make this easy, use my already designed Movie Ticket Cricut Design Space project here! It has generic wording so that it can be used with any movie. If the project gives a “too large for mat” message, click “customize” and resize to fit to your size mat and paper.
Place white card stock on the LightGrip Cutting Mat.
Send the design to the Cricut Maker. Pay close attention to the directions within Cricut Design Space at this point. It will give exact specifications on which blade to insert at the beginning of the project. Follow the instructions to complete the writing portion, the perforation, and the cutting.
The tickets will peel from the mat ready to perforate!
The Wavy Blade
The Cricut Wavy Blade creates a fun, wavy line on paper, card stock, acetate, poster board, and other similar materials. I suspect that my card maker and scrapbooking readers will especially like this blade! I used it to add a fun wavy detail to a Movie Night Sign to advertise our fun night.
Supplies:
- Cricut Maker
- Cricut Wavy Blade
- Cricut Fine Point Cutting Blade
- Cricut Light Grip Cutting Mat
- Variety of card stock colors (in use for this specific project: black card stock, white card stock, red card stock, dark yellow card stock, dark gray card stock, gray glitter card stock)
- Craft glue
Log into Cricut Design Space. Use my already designed project HERE!
If you wish to make the sign larger, click “customize” to resize it. Otherwise, it is ready to cut.
Send the project to the Cricut machine. Pay close attention to the details in Cricut Design Space. It will instruct on which paper color to use first and which blade to insert first.
Follow all the instructions until all pieces of the sign are cut out.
Using the completed photo below as a guide, glue each of the sign elements on to the gray back ground.
- Glue the white film strip to the middle.
- Glue the black circles down.
- Glue the gray glitter card stock circles over the black circles, aligning the dots.
- Glue the yellow star to the side.
- Glue the words at the bottom.
Here’s a close up of the fun wavy edge!
The Engraving Tip
The Cricut Engraving Tip is every metal worker’s dream! But, guess what?!?! It not only works on metal, but also acrylic sheets. I tried my hand with the Engraving Tip and acrylic sheet.
I used the Engraving Tip to make the word “SNACKS” on a piece of acrylic. I liked the look of it plain, but I also wanted to try paint the back of the acrylic. I’m not sure which look that I like better, but there is a lot of room to experiment. One precaution when using the Engraving Tip: Be sure to use your StrongGrip Cutting Mat and use blue painter’s tape to tape down the edges of the material to be engraved.
The Fine Debossing Tip
Unlike the Cricut Cuttlebug, which uses embossing folders and embosses material by creating pressure through the bottom of the material, the Cricut Fine Debossing Tip uses no folders and embosses by pressure from the top of the material. Use the Fine Debossing Tip on foil card stock, coated paper, glitter paper, basswood, leather, and many other material options. I’m using the Fine Debossing Tip to make these “movie star” cupcake toppers with foil card stock.
Supplies:
- Cricut Maker
- Cricut Fine Debossing Tip
- Cricut Fine Point Cutting Blade
- Cricut Light Grip Cutting Mat
- Foil card stock
- Hot glue gun and hot glue
- Long toothpicks
Log into Cricut Design Space. Use my already designed project HERE!
If you wish to make the cupcake toppers larger for jumbo cupcakes or smaller for mini cupcakes, click “customize” to resize them. Otherwise, they are ready to cut for standard size cupcakes
Send the project to the Cricut machine. Pay close attention to the details in Cricut Design Space. It will instruct on which paper color to use first and which blade/tip to insert first.
Follow all the instructions until all stars are cut out.
Hot glue one toothpick to each star.
Which tool do you think that you will be using first? I’m having fun with all four!

I love these decorations! I need to get a Cricut so I can make some of these. We do enjoy movie nights.
Thanks for sharing about these new tools. I love how it turned out. I am excited to try out the new tools as we have two upcoming parties to plan and decorate for!
Love your movie night decorations. My godson’s daughter is thinking about buying a Cricut for her wedding next year. I think she should because she’ll end up recouping her money in the long run instead of hiring out for a service that this could easily do!
This is so awesome. It makes me regret selling off my Cricut, but alas, I will get a new one some day. I Love how many cool things you can do with Cricut and having a movie night made with new cricut tools is a really fun idea.
What an adorable idea and looks like it is so fun to make. Those star cupcake toppers would be perfect for birthday parties too.
That is so cool! The Cricut is awesome and I love that you can do so many different projects with it!
What a fun way to make family movie night even more special! My crafty sister has a Cricut and loves it! I’ll share your project page with her.
