Monkey Munch Snack

A few weeks ago, I shared how blessed our church is to be using the Camp Kilamanjaro VBS theme this year for our VBS week. Not long after that post, Family Christian Stores challenged me to make a quick and easy snack to go along with the theme, and I thank them for sponsoring today’s snack. So I decided to share my super secret when creating themed snacks for a party, VBS, or a group.

It’s actually all in the name.

It’s not necessarily in the ingredients. You don’t have to be a master chef. You just have to get creative with the name.

Take today’s snack, for example. This is a spin on the traditional Puppy Chow recipe. But we’re changing the color and calling it Monkey Munch to coordinate it with the African-themed Camp Kilimanjaro VBS curriculum. Too easy, right?

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups chex mix cereal
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup chocolate
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder

Microwave chocolate and butter in a bowl for 30 seconds on high. Remove from microwave and stir. If the mixture is not melted together yet, place back in the microwave at ten seconds intervals until melted together. Add vanilla to the mixture and stir completely. Add cereal, one cup at a time, until the cereal is covered with the butter mixture.

Place the cereal in a sealable bag with the powdered sugar and cocoa powder. Shake until the cereal is completely covered. Pour the puppy chow in another bowl or in containers.
If desired, add additional melted chocolate over the snack mix.

This is a quick, easy, and inexpensive snack mix for a crowd, making it perfect for parties and VBS!
