A few weeks ago, I shared the great finds that I spotted at our local thrift store, the Winston-Salem Rescue Mission. Today, I’d like to share another way that locals can help out the community thrift store: volunteering.
My hubby is a local youth minister, so we have the opportunity to volunteer maybe more than most. It’s ironic how we schedule volunteer dates in hopes that our students will learn something or show the love of Christ by giving back, yet usually us (the adults!) get as much out of the experience as the teenagers do. A week ago, we took our youth to the Winston-Salem Rescue Mission to clean for the morning. The employees of the store are so busy that they rarely have time to do any type of in-depth cleaning, so our students were privileged to serve them in this way. We swept the floors, dusted the furniture, and talked with customers. I snapped a few photos before rolling up my sleeves:

Volunteering here is easy enough for younger students- anyone who can use a broom or organize a table will be useful. So if you’re looking for a place to work or shop, see your local thrift store- I’m sure they would be glad to have you!
(As a side note, I did get some shopping in while we worked. I snagged two pairs of Stride Rite shoes for the little one and a few fat quarters of material for a grand total of $4.50.)
For my local readers, the Winston-Salem Rescue Mission Thrift Store is celebrating with a HUGE customer appreciation day on June 2, 2012 from 10 am to 2 pm. It will be complete with handmade ice cream, face painting, and graduated discounts on purchasing items.
They will also be offering tours of the Mission facilities, so this is a great time for anyone interested in volunteering to check out the premises.
