My daughter’s class has a Valentine Box DIY challenge this year. In the past, she has made boxes from a variety of items (shoe boxes, cereal boxes, etc.) but has typically painted them and then applied stickers or created a drawing. This year she wanted to put a little more work into it and get creative with her DIY.
I follow the Plaid paint Facebook page, and they recently shared a super cute Llama Valentine Box project. I showed it to my daughter, and she decided that she could definitely make it on her own. I helped her by cutting a few pieces out with my Cricut machine, but she painted and glued on her own. I taught her to use the hot glue gun with my supervision. She surprised me by not burning herself once.
This Llama Valentine Box is made with cotton balls and other upcycled materials. The original project tutorial used an oatmeal canister. We did not have one available and used an elongated box instead.
For the ears and eyes, I used card stock to cut these elements with my Cricut Maker machine. A Cricut Explore Air machine is also compatible with this project. If using the Cricut machine, you’ll also need a Cricut LightGrip Cutting Mat and fine point blade, as well as white, pink, and black card stock. Open up Cricut Design Space. Click HERE to use my eyes and ears file for this project. Click “customize” to resize the eyes and ears, if needed.
The Llama Valentine Box is made with mainly paint and cotton balls. From there, I raided my craft room for the other elements. I already had everything in my craft room and only purchased a bag of cotton balls for about $2.50. Outside of paint drying time, my daughter worked on this for about an hour and a half. You can find the full tutorial from Plaid Crafts here.
We found cute llama themed Valentines at Target for her to pass out to her class.
