How to Use Cricut Faux Leather {Cricut Materials Series}

Have you wondered how to use Cricut Faux Leather? I’m sharing uses and tips for it today! This post contains affiliate links, which when purchased through add no extra cost to the consumer, but help support this site to bring more Cricut tutorials and posts.

Cricut Faux Leather is one of my favorite Cricut materials. From jewelry to hair accessories to decor, Cricut Faux Leather is a versatile crafting medium. If you’ve never used it before, then you may have how-to questions regarding this material. Let’s review a few tips and tricks on faux leather today!

Complete Guide on How to Use Cricut Faux Leather in the Cricut Materials Series

What is Cricut Faux Leather?

Cricut Faux Leather gives the look and feel of real leather. It has the textured faux leather on one side and a felt material on the reverse side. It comes in a variety of faux finishes and can be purchased in a sampler pack or on a roll. The rolls typically come with 1 sheet in 12 x 24 inch size, while the sampler packs have 5 sheets that are 12 x 12 inches. The rolls currently come in a variety of colors in the woodgrain and pebbled finish categories. The sampler packs come in faux suede, woodgrain, and a pebbled patina sampler. The rolls are great for larger projects, while the sampler packs offer more finish variety for smaller projects.

The Cricut Faux Leather is lucrative to crafters because it does not require a deep cut blade. The Cricut Machine will cut the faux leather cleanly with the standard blade that comes in the machine. The faux leather is also not as expensive as purchasing genuine leather.

What Cricut machines can cut the Cricut Faux Leather?

Any Cricut machine, including the Cricut Explore series and the Cricut Maker.

What sorts of projects can I make with the Cricut Faux Leather?

The Cricut Faux Leather is perfect for faux leather jewelry, faux leather clutches, home decor, hair accessories, or for embellishments for card making, scrapbooking, etc.

How do I cut the Cricut Faux Leather?

Design your project in Cricut Design Space. Place the Cricut Faux Leather onto the cutting mat. Load the mat into the Cricut machine. Send your image to the machine from Cricut Design Space. Set the cutting dial on the machine to “Custom.” Within Design Space, choose “Leather, Faux – 1mm (Cricut)” as the material.

Additional cutting tips:

-If your StandardGrip Green Mat is fairly new (with lots of sticky!), then this mat will work for cutting. Be aware that the felt will leave a bit of fuzzy on the mat surface. Alternately, you may also use a StrongGrip mat if your mat is not sticky enough OR turn the faux leather with the felt side facing UP. If you choose to turn the faux leather with the felt side facing up, be sure to MIRROR the image before cutting.

-When making jewelry or other items where the back of the faux leather will show, consider cutting a reverse (mirror) image in addition to the original image. You can then glue the two pieces together so that the felt reverse side is not show. You can see an example of that in this jewelry post.

I tried cutting the leather on the strong mat, problem is when it cuts it still comes up off mat an messes it up or jams machine. I cut the leather face up seems to cut better that way I guess going through the tough part first.

Hi, I tried this method tonight and used a spray adhesive glue. The faux leather now has glue on it and is sticky. Can you recommend a glue that would allow me to line up my designs and not leave a residue ? Thanks!!!

Hi, since the Faux Leather is more “fabric” than paper, I use Aleene’s Fabric Fusion. You can see here via this #AmazonPartner link: https://amzn.to/2s17O9A .

I am having the same issues. I have tried using the deep cut blade with genuine leather setting, and genuine leather setting with fine cute blade. Along with new blades and it is still not cutting through. I’ve changed the pressure as well. I don’t know what else to do

Here is an informative post on cutting leather with a Cricut Explore: https://damasklove.com/how-to-cut-leather-cricut-explore/ . If you’re already cutting your leather with this main method, I’m not sure what the issue could be. Unfortunately, you may have to contact customer service for trouble shooting.

No, it should look like a cut image. Design Space should not prompt you to print.

I’m having trouble cutting faux leather than has the thicker cotton backing. I have tried to put the backing on the mat, and also tried to doing the leather part face down. It seems like the leather shifts when it is being cut to my design is dragging and not coming out exact. I hope that this is making sense. I am currently using a cricut explore one. I use a custom setting with a deep point blade, but I have also tried the normal blade and have the same issue. Any insight?

Hi, have you tried taping it down around the edges with blue painter’s tape? Are you using a StrongGrip cutting mat?

Does anyone know about the super sparkly material that came with my faux leather pack? It seems like it might not cut with the regular method but it came in a pack of cricut faux leather pages
