How to Upload SVG Files or Images in Cricut Design Space

Have you downloaded a SVG file to use with your Cricut machine? Here’s how to upload s SVG file or image in Cricut Design Space. This post contains affiliate links, which will not cost you extra, but helps support this site and keep Cricut tutorials coming.

How easy is to to upload a SVG file to Cricut Design Space? It’s easier than uploading images! With JPEG or PNG images, I have to clean up the image after importing into Design Space, but SVG images transfer right over into the Design Space as they are.

UPDATED: Please see THIS post that features this tutorial in  the latest version of Cricut Design Space.

How to Upload SVG Files or Images in Cricut Design Space

SVG files can be purchased from a variety of sites, including Etsy. Some bloggers may offer them as free downloads. My absolutely FAVORITE place to obtain SVG files is The Hungry Jpeg. After browsing so many websites and trying to wrap my head around licensing terms, The Hungry Jpeg has the easiest to understand. All of their images and fonts come with a commercial license, making them perfect for Cricut users who sell at craft fairs.

The SVG file that I am using today is from The Hungry Jpeg, and it is FREE! I already have an account with them, and I simply downloaded it in a matter of seconds.

All files from The Hungry Jpeg are ZIP files. If your SVG image is a ZIP file, then it must be extracted into a regular file by locating the ZIP file under your computer downloads, right clicking, and extracting the file. I always rename mine so that that I can locate the file easily later.

From here, open up Cricut Design Space. Click on “Upload.”

Cricut Design Space will give the option of uploading an image or using the image as a pattern fill. I talk about pattern fill in the post DIY Printable Magnets. To upload the SVG, click “Upload Image.”

You can open the file on your computer and drag and drop it into the space, or you can click “Browse” and insert the SVG file.

The image will appear in the box, and Design Space will ask for an Image Name and Tag. If you plan on importing many images, this is an important step that you do not want to skip. Name and tag the image something that will be easy to locate later. Fill in the blanks and click “Done.”

The image will then appear in the list of uploaded images. To use the image, select it and then click “Insert Image.”

The image will appear on the Design Space canvas.

That’s it!

I have not used Craft Room, so I am unsure. Here is a video that I found regarding downloading files if it is helpful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jb0mMibt7Kk

I purchased several svgs and cant seem to get them to transfer to my Cricut design space. I am not sure where they are. I see duplicate files but when I pull them up they were empty. Any suggestions for me???

So are you saying that you import the SVG files, and Design Space is saying that it is completed, but when you try to go back to retrieve them they are gone?

I have followed these steps exactly except when I click “Make It” the image does not load on the next screen and all I see is a spinning circle. Am I missing a step?

    • Melanie says

      December 27, 2017 at 8:52 pm

Hmmm..the spinning circle makes me think that it is an uploading issue with Design Space. Is the image very complex? I had an extremely complex photo that I did one time that took several tries, and I eventually just had to walk away and let it upload for probably 30 minutes? I would try logging out of Design Space, logging in again, and trying the upload again. If you get the spinning circle, give it 15-20 minutes to “think.”

I have done all these steps, but my Cricut will not allow me to cut it. It says I need some kind of permission. What am I doing wrong?

After I upload my SVG file in my explore air 2, all the words and letters are jumbled up? How can I correct this?

    • Melanie says

      February 4, 2018 at 1:39 pm

Is it an all-word file like in the example in this post or is it an image? Do you have a link to the file so that I can take a look at it?

I followed all the steps you listed and wen I go to the screen where the svg file should be after I hit insert, it is no there. but it is on the right where you can choose colors… there is a pair of scissorsin a circle, but no picture on the grid on the left. if I hit the make it button it says it is too large, but when I try an resize it nothing happens HELP. and yes I may be slightly computer illiterate

    How do I upload fonts?

    • Melanie says

      February 22, 2018 at 8:32 am

Hi, to upload a font, first it has to be installed on your computer (Download the font. Then open the download and install the font on your computer). After that, open up Cricut Design Space and the font should populate in the font list.
The most important part (but often forgotten) is to actually install the font on your computer. Just downloading the font from the source or etsy or wherever does not actually install it on the computer. You have to go into the font download and install it. Once this is done, the font will be available in Design Space.

Hi Melanie I just got the ExplorerAir2 and never had a cricut and learning. When I download a SVG file, how do I get it to download the image the exact size, in this case flower petals, stamens etc. Also when I try to cut it the machine wont let me cut on 8 1/2 Ă— 11 paper. Thank you so much.

    • Melanie says

      July 30, 2018 at 2:06 pm

When you refer to the “Exact size,” what do you mean? SVG files enable you to resize the image to whatever size that you want. It will download and then you can resize it once it is in the design space. I’m not sure why the machine will not let you cut on 8/12 by 11 paper. What size is your image? The Design Space may be registering the image as too large for the mat.

I have about 50 shapes of different colors that are currently on pdf. I tried batching them by color, but when I import, they all come into the design space in different sizes, and ultimately, they need to work together. Any suggestions on how I might import and keep the sizes the same as the original pdf? Thanks.

      October 3, 2018 at 9:03 am

No, not for a pdf. SVGs are the files that are the best for importing and maintaining their size and shape.

Hi. So I recently purchased a svg font design called (MARTIN) from Etsy. So I downloaded it from Etsy to my computer, when I tried to upload it to my silhouette I couldn’t find the svg files. I did the extract part and still nothing. It then told me I needed to upgrade my silhouette to the designer edition! Is this correct (before I spend my money lol). Also the font/letters were sent as but the are all separate how will that work in silhouette when using them to make words.

Thanks for the help and time.

Hi, This specific tutorial is for Cricut Design Space. I have not used a Silhouette in years, and I am not sure about their Designer Edition. I recommend checking out the Silhouette School site or contacting Silhouette customer service.

    • Melanie says

      August 15, 2019 at 5:01 pm

Hi, for those in png format, you can still upload those as they are, but the images will not be editable or in layers. For the .zip file, find the .zip file on your computer. Right click the folder and find the option to unzip the files. Once they are “unzipped” they will be in a format to upload to Design Space per this tutorial.
