How to Create the Perfect Craft Stick Star Ornament

This Craft Stick Star Ornament decorating craft project is great for children’s church, Sunday School, or any children’s Christmas crafting table. Thank you to CraftProjectIdeas.com for providing the craft materials for this easy Christmas ornament craft for kids.

Are you looking for a good Christmas ornament craft for a large group? I recently made 30 of these Craft Stick Star Ornaments for a church children’s Christmas party, and they were a great craft idea for a wide range of ages. Making a star out of craft sticks sounds simple, but it is definitely a lot easier if the sticks are assembled a certain way. Here’s the best way that I’ve found to assemble these stars, and read on for tips for using this Christmas craft in a group.

As a mom, I appreciate kid-made ornaments that hold up well over time. I’ve dried way too many tears over an ornament or craft that fell apart shortly after making it. For this reason, I opted to secure these Craft Stick Stars with a hot glue gun rather than a traditional crafting glue or kid-friendly glue.

If using a hot glue gun, do not allow children to assemble the stars. Do this step prior to the children’s craft time.

There are several different craft stick sizes at craft stores. I’m using a traditional size for this project. White or colored craft sticks are also available. See a variety at CraftProjectIdeas.com.

Step one:

Glue two craft sticks together to create an upside down v. The craft stick on the left should be over the craft stick on the right at the top.

Step Two:

Glue another stick to the bottom of the right side stick. The stick end should be under the end of the right side stick, as seen below.

Step Three:

Add a stick to the end of the right side stick. This stick should be on top of the end of the right side stick.

Step Four:

Add the final stick across the middle, threading the stick between the original upside down v shaped sticks.

To complete the ornament, glue a piece of twine to the top as an ornament hanger.

We paired these Star Ornaments with various supplies for the kids to decorate their own ornament. Use anything on hand, but here are a few items that we supplied:

  • Lots and lots of glitter glue! Kids love glitter glue, and it doubles as a decoration and a medium for securing other items on the ornament.
  • Fuzzy poms (large or small)
  • Adhesive jewels
  • Sequins
  • Foam Christmas or winter themed stickers
  • Small feathers

Be sure to cover the crafting table with a disposable table cloth for easy clean up.

Also, cut small pieces of paper and staple one to the twine hanger on each star for children to write their name on their ornament creation. Lay the ornament to dry until the children pick them up as they leave the party.
