So you have your new Cricut, and you’re ready to make an awesome project. Maybe a heat transfer vinyl shirt or a cute sign? Except you’re not too excited about the default font in Cricut Design Space. Changing the font seems like it would be an easy thing. In a recent discussion with a new Cricut owner, she one of the things that confused her the most when starting out in Cricut Design Space was figuring out how to change the font. Here’s a quick tutorial on how to change the font when working on your next Cricut project.
UPDATE: Please note that this tutorial is in a previous version of Cricut Design Space. You may notice that your screen appears a little different, but the general process is still the same. For a look at changing font (and more elements of the text editing panel in Cricut Design Space) in the latest version of Cricut Design Space, view the video below.
Begin by just typing your text. You can go ahead and center it and align the words how you wish.
While the text is still highlighted, click the edit button in the right hand column. A new section will appear with lots of choices!
Under the “All Fonts” menu, you can narrow down the types of fonts that appear. I typically just leave it at all fonts. However, if you are using the pen writing tool, then the “Has a Writing Style” style may be helpful. When using the pen writing tool, I like fonts that are solid all the way through and look like they are hand lettered. The “Has a Writing Style” includes the fonts that are perfect for the pen tool. When I’m cutting vinyl, etc., I leave it at all fonts.
From here you may go through the list and choose which font you want to use. You’ll notice that some of the fonts have symbols or numbers to the right. The ones with prices are the fonts that cost extra to use. The ones with an “a” are the ones that are free if you are a Cricut Access member (do you wonder if Cricut Access is worth it? See THIS POST!). All the others are the Cricut fonts or fonts that you have uploaded to your computer.
One word of caution- Sometimes it takes a little bit of time for the fonts to load. By little bit of time, I mean several minutes! I’m not certain if this is everyone’s experience or if it’s just because I have so many fonts loaded on my computer. But the fonts will eventually load if you give it a chance (without clicking the button a gazillion times like I do).
Once you click the font that you want, it will change the text to that font. Don’t like the font? Click another one until you find one that works for you!
If you’re just getting started with Cricut Design Space, here’s another beginner tutorial that many readers have found helpful:
I have a question. I have the Cricut Air and I have been trying to cut vinyl and it snags can you help with a solution I want to make some gifts and the is a problem.
Is your blade dull/old? Also, here is a Cricut trouble shooting page: http://help.cricut.com/help/cricut-machine-tearing-dragging-material
I have a question. I am stumped! When I open my crusty design space app I currently don’t have the left hand column. So I am unable to upload files etc. help!!! Any ideas why or what I’m doing wrong!!
Have you had it before and it disappeared? You may need to back out of the page, clear your computer’s cookies and cache, and then try again. If this persists, I would call customer service.
I haven’t had that side panel at all since the beginning! I will try what you suggest! Thanks!
Yes, you should have it for sure! If there is a way to uninstall it and re-install, that may be something else you could try.
Or try a different browser to load Design Space. Sometimes there is a conflict.
how do I access your tutorial how to curve writing…..it is on the page but I can’t get it to open…..however…I am old and don’t understand most of this stuff so I am sure it is something I am either not doing or doing wrong
thanks
I think you can just click on the picture of the football. When I did it, I got options like open in a new tab or window. However, this is another Pin on Pinterest.
It is here: http://ithappensinablink.com/how-to-curve-text-in-cricut-design-space/
Hello,
Please share what the name of the font is that you are using in the title of this blog. I have been looking for it everywhere!
Hi, It is called Fontbox Biscuit Base. It is part of this package: https://crmrkt.com/BqWP2
I am trying to replicate font I used in a Word doc – Times New Roman, Bold, 24 point, in a text box that’s 4.75″ wide by .5″ high. Design Space keeps changing my dimensions and/or font size, even when I unlock the padlock. Is there any way to get it to stay to exactly what I want?
Have you tried logging out of your account, clearing your cache/cookies, and then trying again? Also, try in a different internet browser if you haven’t already.
Please help. When I am working with a text box in Design Space, after a while, the drop down menu where you choose the font disappears from the Edit tab making it impossible to change the font in the text box. The Edit tab shows only the choices to change size, rotate, and position. If I create a new text box, the drop down comes back. How do I get the font selection menu back in the Edit tab for that text box? Thank you.
Hi, if you haven’t tried this already, attempt the following:
1) Save your project.
2) Log out of your Cricut account.
3) Clear your computer’s cache and cookies.
4) Log back into Cricut Design Space, open the project, and try again.
Cricut has also unlocked their new Design Space: https://design.cricut.com/ . If you are not using this, I recommend downloading it. I have had no font issues like I had with the older version.
Under the ALL fonts I see the option ” Script MT Bold” . I used it in a project and then when I went to cut the design it said “this font not available on this mobile device”. What does that mean and how do I use this font?
Thank you!
Are you trying to use it on your phone or iPad or on a desktop computer/laptop?
Once I ungroup a word there is no place for me to click group. Its on my design grid but it is shaded out once i click ungroup
Are you selecting more than one letter to group? More than one must be selected in order for the Group icon to show back up again.
how do I select more than one letter? When I click on a second later the first one goes off
ahhhh found it. thanks. I never would have figured it out
Glad that you found it! Happy crafting!
I’m trying to write bold sold black letters, but when I change from cut to write the letters are just outlined. How to I keep them solid??
Hi, writing is either single stroke (with the Cricut) or outlines. You’ll need to choose a writing font that is already filled in or color the lines in after writing .
I am having the same problem. Is there a way to have the machine fill in the letters after writing? I am a new user. Thanks!
Hi, you can always fill them in yourself with a marker. But, unless you’ve chosen a writing font that is already filled in (and I do not think that there are any that are very thick already included in Design Space), it will not write that way on its own.
How can I make my Gravestone font thicker?
Is there a BOLD option? If not, then I know some crafters “shadow” the letters to make them thicker, but I am too lazy of a crafter to try that :). I usually just choose another or find one that I like on The Hungry JPeg if the ones in Design Space are not what I am looking for.
Trying to edit an existing text…changing a word from “redeemed” to “victory”. It took me forever to get redeemed the way I wanted it. So now want to edit redeemed and type victory in its place…instead of starting all over. Is this possible?
Using Cricut explore with a MAC.
Thank you!
Hi, I am not familiar with a MAC, but I wouldn’t think that it would be any different. Are you able to change one letter at a time, perhaps even starting in the center of the word? As if you are trying to change the spelling of redeemed rather than wiping it and starting over?
I don’t have the edit button on the right hand side of my design screen. How do I change the font of words I’ve already typed in?
Thank you!
Hi, This tutorial was done with a previous version of Design Space. For the current version, double click on the text box so that it appears “editable” again. Highlight the words that you want to change, and then select your font choice in the box near the top.
I am trying to change writing fonts to something other than the default font. I have several font cartridges that I’ve linked but none of them will open.
Are they showing as linked? If you haven’t done so already, try closing out the program completely (logging out and everything) and then restarting Design Space. If the cartridges are not showing as linked, try to link them again. If that still does not work, it sounds like a Design Space issue and you may need to contact customer service.
Just wondering, is it possible that after a project is saved and you’ve exited. When you come back to your saved project, can you change the font? I haven’t had any luck finding out how to do that. I have a verse I’d like to cut in vinyl, but want to change the font.
Sure. As long as you have not flattened the image so that all the elements are now completely together, you may go back in and change the font at any time.
I don’t get the option to BOLD anything.
Just regular…. help!!
Hi, The option won’t always be on all the font choices I’ve discovered, but some of them. Are you not getting the BOLD option for any of them?
Can you tell me how to edit text on an “already created” project that I pull into the Design Space? I tried to change the font but it doesn’t effect the text box that is already in place. Thanks!!
Hi, Unfortunately, some Design Space projects will not allow changing the font.
I do not have the edit tab on the right side of design..Only layers and color sync. I am a newby and trying to figure it out. Thank you!
Hi, This tutorial was made with the previous version. With the new Design Space version, you can use the text options at the top to change the font.
Hi,
How do I fill in outlined font in design space? I’ve looked everywhere and can’t see the find any tutorials.
Thank you!!
Hi, I’m assuming that you are referring to how to fill in fonts/letters when using the Cricut pens and the “write” function. Unfortunately, at this time, fonts/letters cannot be filled in. You have a few options: 1) Filling in the letters by hand with a marker after the machine writes it or 2) Finding and downloading a “chunkier” font and using the largest thickness pen that you have.
i have added some fonts to my design space. i wish to uninstall the font because cricut has a font similar to it.
how do i remove the fonts that i do not want from cricut design space?
Hi, Cricut Design Space automatically pulls fonts from those installed on your computer. You will need to uninstall the font from your computer.
Hello, I am a desperate mother trying to finish hangers for my daughter’s wedding party before the big day. Can you please tell me how to thicken a cursive font so it will cut properly and not rip?
Hi, you can try bolding the font. Other than that, the only options are to choose a different font or widen the letters.
