First, a word about the fabric. Choose your fabric wisely. For these pillows, I recommend a nice, home decor fabric. I was super lucky to find an entire bolt of fabric that I wanted to use at a craft sale, but if you don’t already have a fabric that you want to use, I wouldn’t try to scrap by with cheap fabric.
I choose two types of fabric. One matched the main color that my bed already is, the other is an accent color that coordinated with the main color fabric. If you choose to make all your pillows from the same fabric, you will need 5-6 yards. If you want to make the pillows different colors, then you can break that amount up a a little bit.
The inspiration for all of these pillow was given to me by an article in Sewing Magazine. I altered the plans somewhat to fit the materials that I had on hand. For more information on the….
If you participated the last two weeks, you should now have two new pillows on your bed: the ribbon pillow and the quilted pillow.
This week-
The Embellished Pillow
- Sewing Machine
- Coordinating Thread
- Scissors
- Pins
- 3/4 yard of main body fabric
- 1/4 yard of accent side fabric
- 1 or 2 decorative tassels
- 1 1/3 yards of 7/8″ wide double-face satin ribbon, cut in half
- Fiberfill stuffing
Pin and sew one 4″ x 25″ strip to each end of the 17″ by 25″ rectangle, using a 1/2 inch seam allowance.
Step Three:
Fold the assembled rectangle in half to form a tube. Pin and sew the long edges of the rectangle together, leaving an opening in the middle for turning.
Step Four:
Turn pillow right side out and fold the rectangular tube so that the seam will be in the center of the back of the pillow. Sew the tassel(s) in the front center of the pillow. There is no magic tidbit for sewing on tassels- pin them and hand sew them onto the fabric.
Take both of your strips of ribbon and gather them. Be sure to heat seal the ends of each ribbon. Need help on how to gather? See {This Post} all about gathering!
Step Five:
Turn pillow WRONG side out. Pin a ribbon on the inside of each pillow end, adjusting the gathers so that the ribbon fits appropriately. Sew the ends closed, using a 1/2″ seam allowance.
Step Six:
Turn the pillow so that the right side is facing out. Stuff the pillow with fiberfill and slip stitch closed. See this helpful video {here} if you need help slip stitching.
Finished!! Another pillow down. If you have been participating in the sew-along thus far, your bed should now look like this:
Looking better every week!! I’d say this pillow can be completed in 1 to 2 naptimes, depending on your skill level. Come back next week to see what we will make next. And don’t forget- I want to see your pillows! Feel free to link them at my Things I’ve Done Thursday party, to my Facebook page, or to my blog Flickr page.
