Gift It: Cute Toddler Robes

Since I didn’t want to spoil the surprise before Christmas, today I’m sharing a cute robe pattern that I used to make robes for my nephew and niece. I embroidered their names on one of the pockets. They actually turned out very cute! My daughter wanted the pink one to be for her (simply because it’s pink), but she settled for just trying on the robe.

I used Simplicity New Look Pattern 6170. Here are a few things that I learned about using this pattern:

  • The robes may be made from flannel or fleece. I tried one robe in each fabric. The flannel robe looks more professional, but when I pre-washed the fabric it looked a little worn. The fleece robe is very thick. This meant that I could skip using the interfacing on the fleece, however, it was so thick that some of the seams didn’t look as good as I like.
  • The pattern doesn’t have direct instructions on how to attach the robe sash. It gives suggestions, but nothing that is actually part of the pattern. I tried attaching small guide-throughs on the sides using heavy thread, but they didn’t last very long.
  • The facing pops up very easily on the inside. The pattern suggests hand tacking, etc., but it’s still not heavy duty, especially for kids’ wear and something that will be washed constantly. I altered the pattern to allow for top stitching in various places so that {hopefully} the facing will stay secure.
  • This pattern is beginner appropriate.
The robe or pajamas from this pattern make a great gift! It’s never to early to start on Christmas gifts for 2013! 🙂

Oooh. I think I may need to make these for my boys! Thank you so much for the pattern tips. (Sometimes patterns need a little decifering.)
I think I may have to use fleece though, it gets plenty cold in Michigan!
