Framed Candy Keeper

I have a stack of black photo frames under one of my sinks. I like the frames, but I have no black decor in my home at all. So I’ve been saving them for rainy day projects and crafts. For some reason, my exhausted brain never said, “Hey, spray paint those babies to match the decor!” Hmm…I used to be smart before I had the triplets. In preparation for Teacher Appreciation, I’ve been crafting all sorts of fun ideas. This Framed Candy Keeper gave me the opportunity to see how the frames hold up to paint. But I’m pretty proud of this project, too– this candy keeper is made from a picture frame, making it perfect for a teacher to sit on his or her desk. Labeled days of the week allow them to fill the frame with their daily sugar pick-me-up. Wait…why am I not making this for myself?

Supplies Needed:

  • 8 x 10 Photo Frame with glass removed
  • Spray paint
  • 1 sheet of Card stock for back
  • 2 sheets of card stock for box
  • Hot glue gun
  • Chipboard– I used a cereal box
  • Scissors
  • Embellishments– Canvas Corp flowers make a great addition!

Begin by painting the frame a pretty color and let it dry.

Take the sheet of card stock that is for the background and cut it to fit the back portion of the frame.

Glue it to the back portion.

Hot glue the back portion of the frame to the frame itself. The box that we are making is a bit heavy so the hot glue will reinforce it.

Now work on the box. I’ve taken a picture of the dimensions of the box. I used chipboard from a cereal box for this. Draw out the dimensions and cut it out from the cereal box. I uploaded a picture to Google Drive if it helps to print it out and use it as a template.

“Score” the chipboard and fold it along the fold lines. I used a ruler to press down along the fold lines and get the fold started.

Cover the chipboard on both sides with the other color of card stock. Fold the box along the fold lines. Use lots of hot glue to hold everything in place!

Glue a length of ric rac along the top to hide any rough edges.

Hot glue the finished folded box in the center of the frame.

Make printed labels with a Word document and printer. Glue these to the box. Add any embellishments. I used a cute Canvas Corp flower that I hot glued Skittles in the center.

I can think of so many people who would like to have daily candy on their desk– can’t you?

I would never have known it was a cereal box. This turned out so well!
