We’ve had a rough winter in our house. I join in with many other Americans who are so ready for spring. Our winter started with my husband being horribly sick with C. Difficile colitis, a terrible bacterial infection that attacks the digestive system. He was sick for literally weeks. It was awful. I could speak from experience because I had a similar illness three years ago. After my infection, I became a loyal probiotic consumer for my own digestive system balance. This winter has been challenging health wise for my husband and the boys, but I’ve been sticking close to these Four Habits for a Healthy Winter and have been able to be the caretakers of all my sick men.
I stock up on spinach and citrus during the winter months. Since so much of our general health is based on the health of our “gut”, filling up on foods that promote this are the only way to go. We eat various fruits for snacks, and I have a spinach salad almost every day.
My hands are raw from washing them so much. I think I have a hand washing obsession. But hand washing is the most effective way to stop the spread of daily germs. Encourage the kids to wash their hands for the length of time that it takes to sing the “Happy Birthday” song.
When my husband was ill, my mother-in-law brought over a jug with her special sanitizer. She is a teacher assistant for a local school, and this is the sanitizer that she mixes and uses in all the classrooms every day. It’s a simple two part spray of 1 tablespoon clorox to 1 gallon of water. She also uses it every night at home to spray down the couch and other hard to sanitize surfaces.
In the best interest of digestive health, I take probiotics every day. For the past week I’ve been taking Perrigo Insync natural probiotics, a doctor recommended, gradual release tablet. A stomach bug has been raging through our house, and even though I haven’t remained untouched, I did not get nearly as sick as the rest of the gang. I can’t help but wonder if daily probiotics had a little something to do with this! A probiotic works in tune with digestive health to promote good bacteria within the intestinal system. The Insync Probiotic are easy to take pills that are gentle on the tummy.

As a busy mom to four kids, I’m not really allowed to get sick. No matter how I feel, I still have to be up and about to make sure our little family keeps going. Know what I mean? So if there’s anything that I can do to make it through the winter unscathed and healthy, I am going to definitely try!
Do you have any tips that you would add to the list? What are healthy winter habits that you follow?
Melanie, great tips for staying healthy. It is so true that your gut health does effect your overall health! I’ve got to check out this probiotic!
I’ve heard such great things about probiotics. I’m around germs all day long at home and in the classroom so I definitely need to check these out. Thanks for the great tips!!
Oh, I am sure you are around germs alot at school! Yes, definitely check these out!
I cannot wait to get past cold and flu season, I’m a crappy nursemaid, LOL! I haven’t gotten on the probiotic bandwagon yet but now I am curious!!
These are great tips – the winter months have been rough this year, and our house has been hit with the stomach bug. Bleh. I need to steal that recipe for the clorox water – sounds like something I could definitely use in my house. And the probiotics? I’m on them – they rock. I couldn’t get through my day without them, honestly.
Probiotics are a MUST! I would add essential oils to your list–they saved us this winter. Thanks for sharing!
I have heard so much about these but have not tried them. I really need to look into them.
We drink Orange Juice like it’s going out of style pretty much all year round so i’m always hoping by the winter time we have helped ourselves. haha
Probiotics are a must!! Year round.
Oh, I know all about not being “allowed” to be sick. It’s almost as if our bodies wait until everyone is well in the house, and then we fantastically collapse!
I’m glad that you managed to get through the stomach bug visit without being affected TOO badly. You’re an important fixture in that house, lady! 🙂
I am SO ready for winter to be over! I haven’t gotten sick yet (*knock on wood*) but I’m hoping that by using my essential oils, it won’t happen!!

Thanks for this! Been wondering about probiotics for a while now…
Those probiotic supplements sound great. I just started on a multivitamin the other day!
These are great tips and I don’t know anything to add to them. I guess eating a healthy diet and getting good exercise, along with the probiotics, is the best way to get through the tough winter months. #client
I really like your tips! I am trying my best to eat healthier. I have been doing well except for last night when I gave into the pizza temptation 😉 I hope these probiotics help you stay healthy! #client
Pizza gets me every time!
