Fleecy Animal Hats

Aren’t these hats the cutest things EVER??? I bought Simplicity Pattern 1953 at a Black Friday sale for 99 cents. This pattern has been worth it- I think I’ve used it more than any other pattern I’ve ever bought. The pattern comes with child and adult sizing. So far I’ve only made the child sized ones, but the concepts are the same.
I can honestly say that I have made every option that came with the pattern. The supplies are basic (fleece and yarn accents), and the hats can be made out of fleece remnants to save even more money! Take a look at my (very bored) model showing off these hats:

I told Princess that she had to model these hats before playing on the slide. I know, I’m totally mean.
The owl hat received a spruce-up for a Crazy Hat Contest at our local Chik-fil-A. I added tulle AND a special hat for the owl (not pictured, but it was super cute!).
Here’s my thoughts on the pattern:
  • It’s very basic- great for a beginner sewer. Buy it- especially if you can get it super cheap like I did. Use it over and over for Christmas gifts, etc. I definitely got my money out of this pattern.
  • Sewing the darts in the pattern was slightly confusing. I was trying to overthink it. Just follow the pattern directions for darts and the hat will turn out as it should.
  • The only thing I disliked about this pattern is that the directions call for slip stitching the ears onto the hats. I made these hats for gifts, and I want them to stand up to winter wear and the washing machine. I don’t know about you, but my slip stitching will NOT stand up to the washing machine. To remedy this, I sewed the ears into the outer hat portion when stitching the hat together. I honestly have no idea why the pattern wasn’t designed this way already.
Animal hats seem to be the trend this year, so why not take a stab at making your own??

Linking to these great parties!

I literally just bought this pattern a few days ago!! Gotta love those 99 cent sales. I opened it up ready to tackle it, and then saw it had darts, freaked out, and put it away. Are these darts difficult? Last time I tried darts I failed miserably.

These are SO adorable–and so is your new blog design, by the way! I’m a crocheter and absolutely stink at sewing, but this might be a pattern worth trying sometime. Thanks for sharing! Oh, and did I mention that your little models are pretty cute, too? 😉
