Graduation season is bittersweet for me. My husband is a youth minister, and we’ve seen many kids come through our youth group over years and head off to college. It didn’t really occur to me what that meant until having children of my own. I see students graduate, and oftentimes my mind forwards to years down the road when my own kiddos are heading on new adventures. This reflection can make me sentimental, but I’ve also used it as a time to re-evaluate my priorities as a parent.
This year, I’ve asked myself the question:
If I could change anything about our family structure this year, what would it be?
The answer was pretty simple.
I would add in more family time. I would want to include more moments throughout the days and weeks that matter. Special events and holidays come and go, but it’s in those daily family times that unbreakable bonds happen.
Then the next question I asked myself (actually, it was more like God asked) was inevitable:
If that’s what you want, why aren’t you making it happen?
Ouch! God definitely had my number on that one. And so I began taking steps to make sure that this happened. Instead of saying no to outings because I was afraid of how the triplets would behave, I said yes. Family meals became a must. And so did family devotions.
Family devotions are a precious time, especially with young children. Their minds are like sponges. They take every Bible story, every discussion, and every thought and hang on to every word. There are days when my daughter will ask me a Bible related question seemingly out of the blue, but it’s because it is something she heard earlier and had been considering in meditation. I love those inquisitive moments.
Family devotions allow God’s voice to be heard to my kids through my and my husband’s voices. It gives us time to pray together and discuss personal and social issues from a Biblical perspective.
Nothing is lost but everything is gained through family devotional time.
A tool that we have been using lately for family devotions is the ESV Family Devotional Bible. This hardbound Bible retells 130 key stories from the Bible with full color illustrations for each story, as well as placed within the Bible text where it is found. The stories are simplified and easy for children of all ages to understand.
The ESV Family Devotional Bible is designed to help families read and apply God’s Word together. Each devotion also includes discussion questions and suggestions for additional reading. It is a wonderful resource for families looking to develop a habit of reading the Bible together and applying it to life.
