“Extra” Thankful for You Turkeys with Extra Gum

We’ve all heard the expression, “It takes a village to raise a child.” I’ve never been more aware of that than I have been in the past few years. My children, but particularly my daughter, have so many people in their lives that love and care about them. It makes my heart happy to see my daughter excited to skip off to preschool every day. She adores her school and all the teachers that have a part to play in her school day. She is already apprehensive of the day that she doesn’t get to go to school there anymore. I’ve been making an effort to explain to her that she is truly lucky and blessed to have so many awesome people in her life, but one lesson I’m learning as a mom of small kids is that often it’s the actions that truly speak louder to little ears. This past weekend we spent baking and crafting special treats with one catch: they were all for others. She chose to make “Extra” Thankful for You Turkeys with Extra Gum for her preschool administrator, who is not only my daughter’s teacher but also a friend who makes her feel special every day.

I’ve always loved a good play on words, so these “Extra” Thankful for You Turkeys with Extra Gum are quite appropriate. This is a kid’s craft with all elements of the craft designed to be kid friendly. Older kids who are writing well can write the saying for the center of the turkey. My daughter is learning her way around scissors, so she enjoyed cutting the wrappings for the gum.

The supply list for this craft is very basic and includes:

  • Foam turkeys- These can be found in the kid’s crafting department at a local art and crafts store.
  • Glue dots
  • Colored paper
  • Tape
  • Scissors
  • Extra Gum

Begin by using the glue dots to attach two of the foam turkeys together on the bottom and sides only.

Use the glue dots in between the feather sections on the top of the turkey.

Cut pieces of paper sized to wrap around the Extra Gum sticks. Use small pieces of tape to secure the paper in place.

Make lots and lots of the paper covered Extra Gum sticks! This is a good time for giggles and silly conversation.

Insert the “feathers” in the top of the turkey. They should fit snugly in between the areas that have been secure with the glue dots.

Add the saying “Extra” Thankful for You in the center of the turkey with card stock and glue dots.

"Extra" Thankful for You

My daughter is excited to give away her crafted turkey tomorrow.
