I’m here today with another quick and easy kid’s craft for you. We made this Easy Cross Bird Feeder for another Children’s Church lesson, pairing it with Matthew 6:25-26. This craft uses only two materials– Cheerios and pipe cleaners– so it’s economical for those looking for a cheap group kid’s craft.
Supplies:
- Pipe Cleaners
- Cheerios
Each crafter will need 2 pipe cleaners. String cheerios on both pipe cleaners, leaving about a 1/2 inch to an inch on both ends without cereal. Take one pipe cleaner and make a loop on one end, twisting the pipe cleaner to itself to create the loop.
Bring the other end up and twist it around the pipe cleaner, a well. Lay this pipe cleaner to the side.
Twist the ends of the second pipe cleaner, leaving a little “wiggle room” within the cereal.
Press the pipe cleaner so that the twisted portion is in the “back” and the circle is “pinched” together.
Insert this pipe cleaner in the middle of the first pipe cleaner. Twist the ends of the second pipe cleaner around the back of the first pipe cleaner.
Press the fronts of the two pipe cleaners together, and wiggle the cheerios so that the pipe cleaners sort of lock together, like a puzzle.
Done! These are fun to make several and see how fast the birds eat them. We placed ours on a short shepherd’s hook out in the yard, and within 24 hours the cereal was destroyed and the pipe cleaners were strewn throughout the front flower bed. We have a “pet” rabbit that has made its home out front, so I’m not sure if the birds ate ours or the rabbit. Either way, my daughter was excited that we had fed the animals!
