DIY Textured Oval Clay Earrings

Texture + oven bake clay is a perfect combo! These DIY Textured Oval Clay Earrings are easier to make than you may think. This post contains affiliate links which, when purchased through, add no cost to the consumer but help support this site to bring more fun crafty tutorials.

If you follow any of my Cricut paper crafting tutorials, then you know that I like adding texture to paper crafts. Texture instantly elevates any craft, and it usually looks harder than it is to complete. These DIY Textured Oval Clay Earrings definitely fall into this category. Add a little texture to oven bake clay with this tutorial!

If you are new to working with oven bake clay, be sure to read my Tips and Tricks for Working with Oven-Bake Clay before beginning.

Supplies for DIY Oval Textured Clay Earrings:

  • Sculpey Souffle Oven Bake Clay
  • Work ‘n bake clay mat – This mat is wonderful! I can use it to first roll and cut my shapes, and then I can bake them directly on the mat. This decreases the chances that I will misshapen my design when transferring it to another baking mat.
  • Clay roller
  • Oval shape from the Premo Mini Metal Cutters
  • Tool with needle end and ball end, like the ones in this clay tool starter kit
  • Clay Texture Sheet
  • (2) Fish hook style earrings
  • (2) jump rings – I purchased a variety box like this one and use the size that I think works best for each jewelry making project.
  • Jewelry pliers

Choose the color for the earrings.

Break off a small piece of clay from the block. Use the clay roller to roll the clay to approximately 1/8″ on the work n’ bake mat.

Choose a texture sheet. Lightly press the texture sheet onto the clay with even pressure. Lift the texture sheet to see the result. If you are happy with the texture, continue to the next step. If you are not happy, roll the clay out again and try again. The great thing about clay is that I can always start over at this step!

Use the tear drop mini cutter to cut (2) oval shapes from the clay. Remove the excess clay.

Use the needle point tip to create a hole in the top of each tear drop shape. Remove any excess clay.

Place the work n’ bake mat on a baking sheet. Follow the instructions from Sculpey on baking.

Per the Sculpey Souffle Website: Bake at 275 °F (130 °C) for 30 minutes per 1/4 in (6 mm) thickness. DO NOT MICROWAVE. Baking should be completed by an adult. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME.

Since we are baking a shape half the size of 1/4,” the shapes should only need approximately 15 minutes. Check them and do not over bake.

Remove the ovals from the oven. Allow to cool completely.

Use the jewelry pliers to attach a jump ring into the hole of one of the ovals.

Continue with the pliers to attach the jump ring (with the oval attached) to the open loop on the earrings. Close the jump ring securely with the pliers.

Repeat with the second oval and fish hook earring.
