If there is anything that I want to avoid this time of the year, it’s the sniffles. That familiar feeling when I KNOW a cold is coming, and it seems like I’m attempting to push back an oncoming train. I dread what is on the horizon, and I wonder who’s going to take over my mom duties while I’m down for who-knows-how-long.
Last winter, my husband brought home a product that he heard about from a friend, homeopathic Zicam® Cold Remedy products. With both of our busy schedules, we were interested in anything that would help shorten the lives of those pesky winter colds. For us, the product lived up to its claim of being clinically proven to shorten colds (*when taken at the first sign of a cold with sneezing, sniffling and/or coughing and in comparison to other products that mask symptoms).
With a variety of products- Zicam® Cold Remedy Medicated Fruit Drops, Zicam® Cold Remedy Nasal Swabs, and Zicam® Cold Remedy RapidMelts® – there is something for every preference! Walmart carries all them, allowing convenient pick-up during grocery runs. Zicam Cold Remedy products are safe and effective, but always research product websites and consult a pharmacist or physician before taking Zicam Cold Remedy Products.
The Zicam RapidMelts were our first introduction to Zicam products. They are non-drowsy and non-habit forming, and they dissolve in the mouth quickly without water. I’ve tried the Cherry and the Citrus flavors, but the Zicam RapidMelts also come in Lemon-Lime with Echinacea.

Since last year, we have also tried the Zicam Medicated Fruit Drops. The container of 25 drops includes the varieties of orange, lemon and cherry.
When I feel a cold coming on, I like to hit it full force with everything that I have! I make a Pineapple Green Smoothie for extra Vitamin C, and I throw these Vaporizing Cubes in the shower to help keep my breathing clear. The Vaporizing Cubes are an easy DIY that only includes a few supplies, many of which most people already have in their closet.
Supplies:
- 1 cup corn starch
- 4-6 tablespoons water
- 3 tablespoons vapor rub
- Silicone ice cube tray – These come in assorted sizes and shapes.
- Mixing bowl or container – Since vapor rub is not to be ingested, I use a disposable mixing container or a container that is dedicated only to projects such as these.
- Plastic spoon
Place the corn starch and vapor rub into the mixing container. Combine. The mixture will still be somewhat crumbly.
Add four tablespoons of water. Combine. The mixture is finished when it is a shaped ball but yet easily pliable. If you’re a baker, then it should resemble cookie dough. If it does not, add water, a half tablespoon at a time, until the mixture looks like this. The mixture should not be watery. If it becomes too liquid-y, correct it with adding corn starch to thicken it again (1 tablespoon at a time).
Press the mixture into the silicone ice cube tray. This tray is for large cubes, and I opted to only fill it halfway to make smaller cubes.
Place the tray into the freezer for a few hours to harden.
