DIY Rope Coasters

From drinking more water, eating a balanced diet, walking with the kids, and taking vitamins, out of all the routines that I do for daily wellness my favorite is my daily cup of hot tea. It is a time for me to relax, curl up with a book or a movie, and drink a cup of exceptional flavor. Bigelow Tea has been a part of my daily routine for years, but over the last few weeks I have been switching up the flavor a bit. Bigelow Tea has introduced their Bigelow Benefits line to stores like Publix, and my new favorite refreshing flavor is the Tumeric Chili Matcha Green tea with an earthy combination of spices and herbs.

I usually enjoy my daily tea mug on the couch. We recently purchased new end tables. Prior to these tables we had not been using coasters. We used coasters a long time ago, but they were wooden and the triplets decided that they made good projectiles. Yup, those coasters had to go. Since purchasing the new end tables, I didn’t want the heat from the tea mug to damage the table in any way. I grabbed some crafting rope and cork to make these easy DIY Rope Coasters that are triplet boy friendly! I have not used these coasters for cold drinks that sweat, so I cannot testify to how they hold up to those beverages. But they are great for protecting tables from hot drinks like tea!

Supplies:

  • Crafting rope or any rope- The size of the rope will determine the look of the coaster. Any rope will do, but I’m using some light weight crafting rope/jute that I picked up at a local craft store.
  • Hot glue gun and hot glue sticks
  • 4″ cork rounds- A local craft store may have these. I had a sheet of cork that I used to cut out 4″ circles for this project. You will need one cork round for each coaster that you desire to make
  • Optional: Hot glue gun gloves or Silicone Hot Glue Finger Caps

I have done this project several times, and my fingers have contacted with the hot glue every time! Use a hot glue gun at your own risk, following the instructions on your specific hot glue gun manual. It Happens in a Blink, LLC, is not responsible for any hot glue gun mishaps.

Heat the hot glue gun. Apply a large circle of hot glue to the center of the cork circle. Twirl the end of the rope in an ongoing circle over the hot glue. Be sure to begin in the center!

Apply hot glue around the outside of the rope and twirl the rope into the hot glue. Continue this until the entire cork round has been covered. Cut the end of the rope and secure with hot glue, tucking it into the rope.

If you are using cork that you have cut from a sheet, it is easy to trim up any cork that may be showing along the edges.

These are also cute if you have a nautical theme in your room or if you have a beach house.

The new Bigelow Benefits line includes many great flavors like Ginger and Peach Herbal Tea, Chamomile and Lavender Herbal Tea, Lemon and Echinacea Herbal Tea, Cinnamon and Blackberry Herbal Tea, Turmeric Chili Matcha Green Tea, Blueberry and Aloe Herbal Tea, and Chocolate and Almond Herbal Tea. I’ve tried several of these and have not been disappointed with any. These teas are Gluten-free and blended and produced in the USA. Bigelow Benefits tea is perfect for the everyday person looking to add routines into their day that promote a healthy and balanced lifestyle. Bonus: They taste fabulous!

I love this project. And thanks for the warning about the glue. That is definitely something that could happen to me! PS: I love my tea time too 🙂 I have a cup of tea twice a day, and the one at night helps me relax and unwind.

I love the beach-y look to those coasters. (Even if they do end up burning off your fingerprints with hot glue) 🙂

I need to make these! Especially because they are soft and won’t hurt when my children chuck them at each other!

Love those coasters! I’m a mom of two boys, with another boy on the way, and these would be perfect for our house. Unbreakable! 🙂 I’ve been enjoying Bigelow Benefits Balance tea. It’s so flavorful and doesn’t need any sweetener. I really love how easy this DIY is, thanks for sharing Melanie! #client

How about doing this with old CDs, rather than the cork????

You could definitely try it. I would try to find something to fill the hole in the center of the CD so if any moisture does happen to make its way through the twine/rope it wouldn’t go through the center of the CD and onto the table.
