DIY Photo Magnets

I love giving photo gifts for the holidays, but sometimes the ones that I order offline are so expensive! I’m always looking for creative ways to make my own. Today- DIY Photo Magnets. Make and personalize them for anyone in your life. The little one and I whipped up a set for the hubby’s office. This craft is great for older kids to help out with, too!

Materials:
  • Paper Mache Photo Frames
  • Scrapbook Paper- I used chevron pattern from Canvas Corp.
  • Mod Podge- I used the Mod Podge Wash Out for Kids for applying the paper and Mod Podge Matte for sealing the project
  • Scissors
  • Roll of Sticky Magnet material
  • Hot Glue
  • Exacto knife
  • Additional items to personalize your magnets. I used Mod Podge Acrylic Shapes and Mod Podge papers
I started with small Paper Mache Photo Frames. I purchased mine at a thrift store, but here is a link to an online site that sells them if you need an idea of what to use.

Begin by carefully removing the easel portion on the back of the frame.

Lay the photo frame face down on the piece of scrapbook paper. Trace around the frame for the shape. Cut out the shape from the paper.

I used the following method because I was afraid of not being able to cut the shape out precisely: Now apply a thin layer of Mod Podge to the frame portion. Apply the scrapbook shape to the frame (the picture opening will be covered). Let this dry for 20 minutes or so.

Using an exacto knife, find the indention through the scrapbook paper where the picture opening is and cut out the opening. With the excato knife or razor, smooth the rough edges of the paper that may be on the inside of the picture opening. Use a thin layer of Mod Podge to seal the edges.

Cut a length of magnet to fit the frame. Hot glue the magnet strip to the back. Be sure that the ends of the magnet strip are secure and flat. If they are not flat, the magnet will not stick. I held mine tightly until it was dry. (hmmm…apparently I did not take a picture here…)

Decorate and personalize the outside of the frame. I used a few Mod Podge Acrylic Shapes and some letters from a Mod Podge Paper collection to create the word “DAD” when the magnets are placed together. Also utilize a few embellishments to cover up any “boo-boos” that may have occurred when cutting the paper.

I’m loving these magnets! They were so easy and honestly came out as one of the most “store-bought” looking projects that I’ve done yet. I want to know if you try them!

Linking to these great parties!
