DIY I {Heart} My Dad Valentine’s Day Shirt

Does anyone else have a daddy’s little girl? My girl has her dad wrapped around her little finger. Forget boys; her daddy is still her valentine! And it doesn’t help when I make her cute shirts like these. Her daddy loves it when she proclaims her love on a shirt for all to see.

This shirt began with a story. While browsing the OshKosh website one day, I came across these super cute I {Heart} My Mom shirts for the triplets. The shirts were on clearance for $3 or $4 a piece, which is definitely cheaper than I could ever make them. I thought that they would be perfect for Valentine’s Day!

However, I couldn’t find a similar shirt for my daughter. So I pulled out my Cricut and made my own.

Supplies:

  • Cricut Explore Air 2 or Cricut Maker
  • Cricut Iron-On Vinyl
  • Cricut Standard Grip Mat
  • Cricut EasyPress
  • Cricut EasyPress Mat
  • Plain white shirt

I’m using one of the Varsity fonts in Cricut Design Space. I use it to type the text and added a heart shape. If you need help changing the font in Cricut Design Space, see my tutorial.

Be sure to mirror the image before cutting!

Place the iron-on vinyl with the clear liner side down on the cutting mat.

Weed the excess vinyl from the cut.

Lay the shirt on the Cricut EasyPress Mat. Place the design (with the liner still attached) on the front of the shirt. Heat the EasyPress to the appropriate settings based on your shirt material and the type of iron-on vinyl that you are using. I always like to use the Cricut EasyPress Interactive Guide to determine the correct settings.

After using the EasyPress to adhere the iron-on vinyl, peel the liner off and make sure the design is attached completely. The Cricut EasyPress Guide will also tell you if the iron-on vinyl of your choice is cold peel or warm peel, something for which I always need a reminder!
