We partnered with Target to bring you this slice of holiday cuteness as part of their #GiftCardCheer campaign.
Gift cards are my absolute favorite gift to receive during the holidays, but I find that I rarely actually give out gift cards. It makes sense to assume that if I like gift cards so much, wouldn’t others like them as well? A recent study conducted by Target discovered that only 30% of people feel acceptable giving a gift card as a gift while 90% of people would like to receive one. Ouch! I fall into both of those percentages, unfortunately. I believe, with a little creativity, we can turn gift card giving into a thoughtful, meaningful gift simply by personalizing the gifting mechanism for the recipient. I have a few bakers, cooks, and chefs in my life, and I know that they will love receiving a gift card packaged in a cute potholder with a DIY Gift Card Pocket. Anyone, even those without sewing skills, can attach this gift card pocket to a store bought potholder or other cloth item.
Ready to get crafty and creative with gift card giving for your Target GiftCard®?
Here’s the supplies you’ll need:
- Target GiftCard®
- Target Holiday Measuring Spoons
- Target Holiday Whisk
- Target Holiday Small Spatula
- Target Holiday Potholder
- Baker’s Twine
- Sewing Needle
- White Thread
- Straight Pins
- White Felt Rectangle, cut to 1 1/2 inches by 2 1/2 inches
Begin by using the straight pins to attach the felt rectangle to the center of the potholder.
Cut a length of thread approximately three feet, and thread it through the needle. Once the ends of the thread are even, tie them in a knot to secure.
On the underside of the felt rectangle and on the inside of the pocket of the potholder, insert the needle and bring it up through the felt.
Bring the needle and thread back down through the felt and potholder pocket. Be sure to not go all the way through the potholder, only the felt and outer pocket.
The stitch should look like the photo below.
Approximately 1/16th below the stitch, begin another one the same way by bringing the needle and thread up through the felt.
Continue bringing the needle and thread up and down, up and down, around the edge of the felt rectangle until reaching the opposite upper corner. To finish the final stitch, knot the loose ends from the inside of the potholder pocket OR go in and out on the final stitch to secure it.
Insert the Target GiftCard® into the gift card pocket.
Arrange the whisk, measuring spoons, and spatula, within the inner pocket of the potholder.
Wrap the outer edges of the potholder to the back. Secure with twine.
Optionally, add a gift tag to the twine as a last touch.
I don’t know about you, but I would be thrilled to receive a gift card packaged this way! Before buying any ol’ gift, get creative with gift card giving this year. This DIY Gift Card Pocket only takes about ten minutes to create and can be accomplished by even beginner crafters.
