When my daughter was born, I began a tradition of purchasing her a new ornament every year. The ornament would be a representation of a favorite hobby or interest for the year. She loves the tradition and looks forward to her new ornament for her tree each December. Now that I have four kids, I want to continue the tradition with them. But I know that I’m not alone in saying, “Wowza! Ornaments can get expensive!”. There has to be a way to DIY cute ornaments for kids, right? When I stumbled across these cute Disney Planes die-cast vehicles on rollback at Walmart, the wheels in my head started turning. Did you smell the smoke? It resulted in two DIY Planes ornaments. One is for a cute DIY Keepsake Ornament, and the other is a more kid-friendly recycled ornament. Either way, there’s Disney Planes fun all the way around!
DIY Disney Planes Die-Cast Keepsake Ornament
- Disney Planes Die-Cast vehicle
- Hot glue gun and hot glue sticks
- Krazy Glue
- Medium size brad
- Metal cutter
Begin by using the metal cutter to remove the long prongs from the back of the brad. See the photo below? Cut directly behind the circle, as close as you can, to remove the long fastener portions. Discard those, and keep the circular portion.
Cut a length of twine approximately five inches long. Fold it in half. Using the smallest amount of hot glue possible, glue the ends of the twine to the back of the brad circle. If you had any small pieces of the metal fasteners remaining, fold those over the twine. Press the back to flatten the twine and any left over metal. The goal is to make this piece as flat as possible.
Bring the twine around to the top of the brad. Tie in a knot. Use hot glue or Krazy Glue to secure the twine on the sides of the brad. It is important to have the twine proportionate in order for the ornament to hang correctly.
Use the Krazy Glue to fasten the twine covered brad on top of the die-cast vehicle. Hot glue will not be as effective or be able to hold the weight of the ornament! Be sure to use Krazy Glue.
Once the Krazy Glue has dried completely, the ornament is ready to hang upon the tree or tie to a gift for giving.
I picked up the individual die-cast vehicles for only $4.97 at Walmart. Not a bad deal for a quick keepsake ornament!
Recycled Milk Jug Planes Ornament
Please note: While most of the steps in this craft are suitable for kids, there are a few steps that require an adult. These steps are clearly marked in the tutorial below.
Do you have any of these little milk jugs around? By adding a few craft supplies, the kids can make a fun Planes themed ornament. It’s also a recycled craft!
- Small milk jug, washed and dried (see photo below for an example)
- Orange paint
- Black paint
- Wooden Scoop Sticks
- Wooden Craft Sticks
- Small hook
- Washout Mod Podge
- Optional: Washi tape or a blue paint
- Adults only: Craft knife
Begin by painting the top half of the milk jug orange. Let dry completely.
Optional: Use blue washi tape or paint to cover up the rough messy line in the middle.
ADULTS ONLY: Use a craft knife to cut one small slit on each side of the jug. This should be just large enough for a popsicle stick. Insert one popsicle stick on each side.
Paint the wooden scoop sticks black. Let them dry completely. Glue them to the “front” of the jug in a propeller pattern.
Glue a popsicle stick to the “back” of the jug.
ADULTS ONLY: Insert the small hook in the top of the jug. I had to use the craft knife to cut a small hole to get the hook started. This hook is a screw-on hook that can be found at any craft store. The screw on hooks stay in the plastic well.
Support your favorite Disney Planes character by writing their plane number on the side of the jug. Let the kids use Washout Mod Podge to seal the paint. Let the Mod Podge dry completely before adding twine to the hook and hanging on the tree.
These ornaments are perfect for the Disney Planes lover in your life. Need a gift to go along with it? In addition to the little single die-cast vehicles above, Walmart currently has other Disney Planes merchandise on rollback, as well. The Disney Planes Flight to the Finish Speedway is now $24.97, the Disney Planes Fire & Rescue Die-Cast Vehicles, 3-Pack, is now $14.97, and the Disney Planes Fire & Rescue Deluxe Talking Vehicle Assortment is now $19.97! I personally picked up the Disney Planes Fire & Rescue Die-Cast Vehicles, 3-Pack, for a gift. For the ornaments, I bought items from the Planes Character Assortment die-cast set and the Disney Planes: Fire and Rescue Character Assortment die-cast set that are on rollback for $4.97. The toys were located in a special section at Walmart.
