This DIY Desk Makeover is one of my favorite upcycle projects that we have ever done! Thank you to Aspect Peel and Stick Tiles for supplying the materials for today’s project.
Those with an office know how expensive an office makeover can be. One of the biggest office makeover expenses is a desk. Have you checked the prices of desks lately? A nice desk is not cheap! Recently, my husband had his office repainted. After a fresh coat of paint, new molding, and nice carpet, he was less than thrilled with his old, brown desk. We didn’t have the expenses to purchase a fancy new desk, leaving us wondering how we could makeover the one that he currently had.
He wanted to add texture and a different color. We considered paint, but neither of us were a fan of painting the entire desk or how likely it would succumb to chipping. I googled “desk makeovers” but nothing eye-catching appeared. I headed to a local home improvement store to wander around to see if I could gain some sort of inspiration.
I passed by a display with a few Aspect Peel and Stick Tiles near the flooring department. I paused to look at them, but I wasn’t sure if my husband would like a tiled look for his desk. But this thought process got the ball rolling. A visit to the Aspect website showed me that they had an entire collection of options. The Peel and Stick Wood Tiles looked perfect for a stylish, yet masculine, desk makeover!
Please note that Aspect does not guarantee the usage of their tiles on desk or furniture makoevers.
Here are a few thing that we learned on this project. It was our first DIY with peel and stick tiles of any kind, but we learned a lot and would definitely use them again!
The tiles are high quality. Aspect Peel and Stick tiles are high quality and durable. For these Peel and Stick Wood Tiles , the pieces are made from real wood (and soooo pretty). In order to cut them to fit, a saw is needed.
Measure the project area. Is there anything more frustrating than beginning a project and not having enough materials to see it through?!?!?! Measure the project area before purchasing the tiles. A general rule of thumb for any project involving tile is to measure the area and add 20% to account for cuts. It is always better to have a little bit more than not enough.
Open the box a few days before getting started. The tiles come with helpful, specific directions. Don’t make the mistake of looking at them five minutes before wanting to start a project! From acclimating to the room temperature to project surface preparation, there are a few steps to take before adhering the tile. Since we want our projects to last, it is always important to properly read the instructions and follow these steps.
For this desk makeover, we opted to not prep the surface by sanding or priming. We made sure that the surface was straight and clean. In addition to the adhesive on the tile pieces, we also used another adhesive on the back of the pieces (as directed on the instructions for project that are not sanded or primed). For the desk corners, a piece of molding did the trick to cover the rough edges.
My husband has received numerous compliments on his desk remodel. It compliments the room much better, and it was a cost effective option when compared to a new desk.
