Have you been following the earring tutorials this week? It’s time to put all those clay earring making concepts together for a fun dangle earring project.
If you are new to working with oven bake clay, be sure to read my Tips and Tricks for Working with Oven-Bake Clay before beginning.
SUPPLIES FOR DIY TEAR DROP CLAY EARRINGS:
- Sculpey Souffle Oven Bake Clay in 3 colors
- Work ‘n bake clay mat – This mat is wonderful! I can use it to first roll and cut my shapes, and then I can bake them directly on the mat. This decreases the chances that I will misshapen my design when transferring it to another baking mat.
- Clay roller
- Triangle, circle, and square mini cutters from the Premo Mini Metal Cutters
- Clay Texture Sheet
- Tool with needle end and ball end, like the ones in this clay tool starter kit
- (2) Ear studs with open loop
- (6) jump rings – I purchased a variety box like this one and use the size that I think works best for each jewelry making project.
- Jewelry pliers
Choose the color each shape of the earrings.
Break off a small piece of clay from each color block. Use the clay roller to roll the clay to approximately 1/8″ on the work n’ bake mat.
Choose a texture sheet. Lightly press the texture sheet onto each clay portion with even pressure. Lift the texture sheet to see the result. If you are happy with the texture, continue to the next step. If you are not happy, roll the clay out again and try again. The great thing about clay is that I can always start over at this step!
Use the 3 mini cutters to cut (2) shapes each of the triangle, circle, and square. Remove the excess clay.
Use the needle point tip to create a hole in the top and bottom of (2) of the shapes. The shape that will be at the bottom of the drop earring will only need a hole in the top.
Place the work n’ bake mat on a baking sheet. Follow the instructions from Sculpey on baking.
Per the Sculpey Souffle Website: Bake at 275 °F (130 °C) for 30 minutes per 1/4 in (6 mm) thickness. DO NOT MICROWAVE. Baking should be completed by an adult. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME.
Since we are baking a shape half the size of 1/4,” the shapes should only need approximately 15 minutes. Check them and do not over bake.
Remove the shapes from the oven. Allow to cool completely.
Take the shape that is at the top of the drop earring. Use the jewelry pliers to attach a jump ring into the top and bottom hole in the shape.
Pick up the middle shape. Attach it to the jump ring at the bottom of the first shape. Place a jump ring in the bottom hole of the middle shape.
Grab the last drop earring shape. Place it in the bottom jump ring on the middle shape. Make sure all the jump rings are closed securely with the jewelry pliers.
Continue with the pliers to attach the jump ring in the top shape to the open loop on the earrings. Close the jump ring securely with the pliers.
