Oven bake clay is one of my favorite crafting mediums, especially for jewelry. I like having a wide variety of jewelry to coordinate with shirts, but I do not necessarily like the prices of jewelry in the store. I tend to dress in muted colors (think brown, white, camel, olive), and jewelry is the way that I add a pop of color to neutral outfits. Oven bake clay is an inexpensive to way to make simple and colorful jewelry at home. In a little amount of time, I can make these DIY Clay Heart Earrings to coordinate with any outfit.
Supplies for DIY Clay Heart Earrings:
- Sculpey Souffle Oven Bake Clay
- Work ‘n bake clay mat – This mat is awesome! I can use it to first roll and cut my shapes, and then I can bake them directly on the mat. This decreases the chances that I will misshapen my design when transferring it to another baking mat.
- Clay roller
- Heart shape from the Premo Mini Metal Cutters
- (2) Earring studs – Make sure that the stud is as close as possible to the size of the shape. The stud should not be so small that the clay shape does not have enough to adhere to. It should also not be so large that it shows past the clay.
- E6000 glue
Choose the color for the earrings.
Break off a small piece of clay from the block. Use the clay roller to roll the clay to approximately 1/8″ on the work n’ bake mat.
Use the heart mini cutter to cut (2) heart shapes from the clay. Remove the excess clay.
Place the work n’ bake mat on a baking sheet. Follow the instructions from Sculpey on baking.
Per the Sculpey Souffle Website: Bake at 275 °F (130 °C) for 30 minutes per 1/4 in (6 mm) thickness. DO NOT MICROWAVE. Baking should be completed by an adult. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME.
Since we are baking a shape half the size of 1/4,” the hearts should only need approximately 15 minutes. Check them and do not over bake.
Remove the hearts from the oven. Allow to cool completely.
Apply E-6000 glue to one of the earring stud surfaces. Press one heart clay shape to the glue. Carefully hold the heart to the stud for a few minutes until it is secure enough to stay on its own (approximately 2-5 minutes).
Repeat with the other heart shape and earring stud.
Allow the glue to cure for 24-72 hours before wearing the earrings.
