DIY Clay Bird Charm Necklace

This DIY Clay Bird Charm Necklace is one of my favorite clay creations! The color combo and details are eye-catching.This post contains affiliate links which, when purchased through, add no cost to the consumer but help support this site to bring more fun crafty tutorials.

I’ve made many clay craft projects over the past few years, but this one is definitely my favorite. The colors, the bird detail, the charm…it all comes together for a fun and cute jewelry DIY!

DIY Clay Bird Charm Pendant

If you are new to working with oven bake clay, be sure to read my Tips and Tricks for Working with Oven-Bake Clay before beginning.

Supplies for this DIY Clay Bird Charm Necklace:

  • (2) colors of Sculpey Souffle Oven Bake Clay
  • Work ‘n bake clay mat – This mat is wonderful! I can use it to first roll and cut my shapes, and then I can bake them directly on the mat. This decreases the chances that I will misshapen my design when transferring it to another baking mat.
  • Clay roller
  • Clay knife, like the one in this clay tool starter kit
  • Bird cutter from the Polyform Premo Mini Cutter Nature Kit
  • 1 circle charm
  • 1 jump ring – I purchased a variety box like this one and use the size that I think works best for each jewelry making project.
  • Jewelry pliers
  • E6000 adhesive
  • Necklace chain

Choose two colors for the pendant.

Break off a small piece of clay from each block. Use the clay roller to roll the clay to approximately 1/8″ on the work n’ bake mat.

Turn the circle metal charm so that the back of the charm is facing up. Press the charm into one color of the clay firmly. Lift up the charm and set aside. The outline of the charm should be on the clay. Use the clay knife to cut the circle out carefully.

Cut the bird out with the mini bird cutter on the other color of clay.

Carefully place the bird on top of the circle. Do not press firmly enough to alter the shape of the bird or the circle.

Place the work n’ bake mat that has the shape Follow the instructions from Sculpey on baking.

Place the work n’ bake mat on a baking sheet. Follow the instructions from Sculpey on baking.

Per the Sculpey Souffle Website: Bake at 275 °F (130 °C) for 30 minutes per 1/4 in (6 mm) thickness. DO NOT MICROWAVE. Baking should be completed by an adult. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME.

The circle portion is 1/8, but the bird portion on top of it changes the width of the center to 1/4 inch thickness. The shape will need somewhere between 15-30 minutes. Check it frequently after the 15 minute mark and do not over bake.

Remove the shape from the oven. Allow to cool completely.

Apply a thin layer of E6000 to the front of the charm. Press the clay circle onto the glue. Allow to dry and cure thoroughly, approximately 48 hours or as directed on the E6000 package.

Use the jewelry pliers to attach a jump ring into the hole of the charm. Attach the jump ring to the necklace chain.
