I never would have dreamed how much of a little boy’s day is consumed with food.
When are we eating?
What are we eating?
What are you cooking tomorrow, Mommy?
Every night, after our bedtime routine, the last thing my boys ask me before turning out the light is to inquire on the next day’s menu. It’s quite comical how they remember to ask every single evening.
Daily responsibilities keep me so distracted that I often don’t know what I’m cooking from one day to the next, much to my boys’ dismay. Weeknight dinners can be challenging, especially during the school year. Though I have always tried to mentally plan my dinner menu, the kids’ activities sometimes don’t correlate with my plans. With careful planning and easy-to-prepare dinner ideas in the freezer, I have done a much better job over the past few weeks of sticking to a Dinner Meal Plan. And now that the boys can read, this DIY Chalkboard Dinner Menu Board keeps them informed of what we are eating each night for dinner. I’m prepared and they are happy – it’s a win-win!
Pizza night is definitely a family favorite! Pizza night may be impromptu after a long day at school and work or a part of a planned family game night. Either way, it’s loved by all.
Ready to make this DIY Chalkboard Menu Board for your family? It’s easy to make! The best part is that you can customize it for your family’s needs. For instance, your family may need a menu plan for all three meals. Or you may want a large menu board that hangs on the wall versus a tabletop board. The supplies listed below are basic supplies, but alter them as needed to create your own custom menu board.
DIY Chalkboard Dinner Menu Board Supplies:
- Wood board – I picked this one up at a local arts and craft store. Most stores have a variety of sizes. The important aspect of this supply is to make sure that the writing surface of the board is flat.
- Chalkboard spray paint – One can should be sufficient for most sized boards. Keep in mind that the project will need several coats.
- Chalk pen
- Chalk
- Felt eraser
- Optional: wood primer
Steps to Make
Step 1 – Clean
Make sure that the wood surface is clean and dry.
Step 2 – Paint
I did not choose to apply wood primer, but if you would like to use wood primer, apply it at this time. If using, allow the primer to dry completely as directed on the can.
Following the instructions on the chalkboard spray paint, apply the chalkboard paint to the wood board. Several coats will be needed. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly.
Step 3 – Prepare the chalkboard surface
All new chalkboard surfaces must be properly prepared. Most chalkboard paint cans will give proper directions on how to do this. Preparation is easy and not time consuming. Rub the side of a piece of chalk over the entire board, and then erase it!
Step 4 – Write
Decorate and write on your Chalkboard Menu Board as desired.
This DIY Chalkboard Dinner Menu Board truly helps with my weekly menu planning!
I love stuff like this. It’s so creative and yet so simple! It makes the house feel more like a home.
I need to do this because it does not stop when they get older…LOL.
I love your DIY Chalkboard menu. It’s so cute! I also love how your kids never forget to ask what’s for tomorrow’s dinner.
What a great idea, when my kids were at home, I had a chalk wall and when they became teenagers, we did a magnet wall because for some reason, teenagers seem to like posters. This allowed them to hang their posters without punching holes in the walls. I like the idea of making these things because depending on the ages of your kids, they are also fun activities that leave you with something useful. Memories, something you can use and the kids get to learn something new. Win all the way around.
I need to make this for sure. My kids are always asking what’s for dinner. This pizza looks so good! We love having pizza for dinner!
Two things here I can definitely confirm and agree with you. My kids also love pizza and love to have a weekly menu laid out like this. The chalkboard menu is very cute and nicely done.
That is cool, will try this out when I have guests over. Adds a creative touch to a traditional menu, love it!
That menu board is SUCH a cute idea! Totally see how it would cut down on the “MOMWHATSFORDINNER” chorus. And now I’m craving pizza!
This is such a cool DIY. Love this pizza as well. I have to make sure to add it to my grocery list. It’s great to have on hand for pizza night.
Your son sounds a lot like one of mine, always wanting to know what is for dinner. When my son went to college, I thought it would stop, but the next kid in line started asking. Your sign looks great, and if your family is like mine, pizza is always a win!
I love your DIY Menu Board! Pizza night would definitely be on ours at least once a week. We can’t get enough of Freschetta!
I love this chalkboard idea. I will be making this soon. We always have a weekly meal plan but only me has a copy. It will be easier to put it on a board so everyone can see it.
That is a super cute menu board! I painted the front panel of our pantry door in our old home with chalk paint with the intention of having a menu board, but my daughter took it over as a place to draw! What could I say?
This is super cute. I want to make one for my kitchen.
My sister in law uses something like this. I think it is so handy. I am sure I would forget and it would be outdated.
I love the idea of a chalkboard menu. I need to get one of these! We love these kinds of chalkboards for all kinds of things. That pizza sure looks delicious too!
This is such a great idea! You can visually look forward to all your upcoming meals of the week this way.
Love this idea! This would be one way to keep our weekly meal plan straight!
I love the look of chalkboard menus in the home kitchen. This is such a cute idea to DIY!
That’s an adorable dinner menu board. I do have one too, but I use a whiteboard instead of chalkboard.
