My husband has been taking a night class working towards his Masters of Divinity. Currently, his concentration is in Pastoral Care and Counseling. One constant aspect that he has learned in multiple courses is the importance of self-care. Self-care is often one of the most overlooked parts of a person’s life. Wouldn’t you agree? I know that it is for me! Yet, it is one of the most important gears in the wheel of life as a mom. In order to take care of my family and daily responsibilities, I have to remember to take care of myself. This is much easier in theory than reality, though!
I do not have large blocks of time for self-care. I can’t remember the last time that I went to a spa. For me, it’s the small things that equate to self-care for me.
When working at the computer, this DIY Aromatherapy Sock Neck Pillow is a soothing, spa-like way to enjoy even working moments throughout the day.
Project Supplies:
- Pair of mid-calf socks
- 2 to 2 1/2 cups of rice (NOT instant rice)
- Peppermint essential oils
- Spoon
- Fabric glue
- Funnel
Step 1
Place about 8-10 drops of peppermint essential oils in the rice and stir.
Step 2
Place one sock on your arm. Cove it with the other sock so that the socks are now doubled.
Step 3
Remove the socks from the arm, making sure that they are still doubled.
Step 4
Use the funnel to pour the rice into the socks.
Step 5
While pinching the end of the socks closed, spread the rice around to see if it is full to your liking. Remove rice to make the neck pillow more pliable or add rice to make the neck pillow more rigid.
Step 6
Fold the ends of the sock over twice.
Step 7
Use the fabric adhesive to secure the ends of the socks in place.
Place the sock in the microwave for about 30 seconds to have a warm neck pillow. The heat will also reactivate the peppermint essential oil scent.
Simple Ways to Practice Daily Self-Care
- Drink more water
- Eat a balanced diet with fruit
- Fit in a few more steps throughout the day, even if it means just taking the steps rather than the elevator
- Meditate a few moments several times a day
- Add supplemental nutrients

Essential oils are amazing. I love neck warmers. What a great and easy idea.
I am an essential oil lover. The neck warmer and the pillow looks so relieving right about now! I enjoyed reading this post.
WOW! What a great idea. I never thought about this until I read this post. I told myself that yeah, it can really be done. I definitely need this so I will copy this and try to make one for myself.
What a great idea. My neck is always hurting by the end of the day. Having this around my neck sounds amazing right now. So relaxing and warm. Going to make my own.
Perfect timing! I was actually thinking about making one of these the other day. My dogs put holes in all of my storebought neck pillows, and I use these when I have a headache. The thing is, I didn’t feel like sewing. I didn’t even think to use fabric glue! Bookmarking this! Thanks!
I am a big fan of essentials oils and I’m always thinking of new ways to incorporate them into my daily routine. I love the sock pillow you made. It came out so practical and adorable. It would be perfect for all those marathon work sessions that leave my neck sore.I’ll be making this this weekend.
I love how simple this DIY is and this will help with my sore neck muscles! Thanks for sharing. ~client
We used to make these when I was a kid and I always loved them! Except my mom used popcorn and baby powder and I HATED the smell. This one would smell so much better LOL. I will definitely try this DIY next time rather than the stinky popcorn.
Oh my gosh! I was crazy looking for my neck warmer last week and can’t believe you just made this DIY look so easy! I never thought of including the essential oils to rice! LOL! Oh my goodness! My house will be FULL of these! LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS!
I seriously need to make one of these for my neck! It always has a cramp from sitting in front of the computer all day!
