Crayon Teacher Wreaths: A Back-to-School Gift

Ever since I saw this Personalized Teacher Classroom Wreath over at How to Nest for Less last year, I’ve wanted an excuse to make one for myself, I mean, my daughter’s teachers. What better reason than the beginning of the school year!!

Skill: Beginner

Supplies:
  • Hot Glue and Hot glue gun
  • Scissors
  • Styrofoam wreath of desired size
  • Canvas or dropcloth material strips (to cover styrofoam)
  • A minimum of 3 packs of crayons
  • A mini chalkboard (or a mini wooden board and chalkboard paint)
  • Ribbon for bow
  • Wire to make a hanger
  • Small cut-outs for the sides of the chalkboard
Begin by covering the styrofoam wreath with strips of canvas or dropcloth material. This is because the hot glue will melt the styrofoam, so covering it first makes gluing the crayons easier.

Take the mini chalkboard and  hot glue it in the center of the wreath near the bottom (if you’ve only got a plain wooden board, cover it with chalkboard paint first).

Arrange the crayons around the wreath and hot glue them in place. This is the hardest part. I didn’t like big gaps in between the crayons, but it was difficult to get them lined up correctly without gaps. I felt like mine turned alittle crazy at the top, but the top will be covered with a bow, so I kept going. I also arranged my crayons according to color.

Glue little wooden shapes to cover the gaps on both sides of the mini chalkboard. I used little wooden flowers from Pick Your Plum.

Use the wire to make a hook/hanger at the top of the wreath. Tie a fancy bow or raffia bow to the top of the wreath.

Let the little ones help however they can. It will help them take ownership of their “gift”. Mine daughter is too little to glue or cut, but she assisted me in arranging the colors.

What a great teacher gift!! I think my two youngest kid’s teachers would both adore it! I think they may each get one for Christmas. I’m pinning it to use later! Really, so cute!

Very fun and appropriate. My kids are old enough now that I feel a bit out of the loop. Didn’t know back to school gifts were on the list too. Maybe first of the year is better than end of the school year. Anyway, good to know. Thanks for sharing on BeColorful.

You said the hot glue will melt the foam if I put the crayons directly on so how do I get the drop cloth to stick?

I began by wrapping the drop cloth around the wreath and then hot gluing the drop cloth to itself. Does that make sense? So as you’re wrapping the drop cloth/canvas, hot glue it to itself instead of the foam.
