Covering Buttons- Dritz No Tools Required Button Covering Kit

I had never covered buttons before I started working on my Pillow Sew-Along Project. But I suddenly found myself in need of learning new skills. I wasn’t sure how to go about covering buttons- I originally thought you could just take any old button, cover it with fabric, and Voila! A covered button! But I soon realized that wasn’t going to exactly work.
The unchartered territory led me to the JoAnn’s notion’s aisle. I found two different options- the Dritz button covering kit that required the tools, or the No Tools Required kit. The covering kit that included the tools was cheaper, but I noticed that JoAnn’s didn’t have enough replacement pieces in case I needed to do more of the same size buttons in the future. I decided that it would be more cost effective for me to purchase the No Tools Required kit. I bought the largest size the store carried- the 1 1/2 inch diameter button kit. Here is what the kit looks like in the box:
The box does have instructions on the back, as well as a button pattern cut-out for your fabric. Each button piece has two parts- a button and a button backplate.
To start, cut the button pattern off the back of the box. Take your fabric (that you are using to cover the button) and fold it in half. Place the straight edge of the button pattern on the fold.
Cut around the button pattern and unfold your fabric piece.
Take your cut fabric circle, your button, and button backplate.
Place the ball (front) of the button on the wrong side of the fabric. Bring the edges of the fabric around and fold them under the teeth that are on the back of the button piece. If this part hurts your fingers too much, use a pencil eraser or other small object to push the fabric against the teeth. It is very important that the fabric is stretched taut and that it is caught securely in the teeth. The fabric doesn’t have to be even on all sides, but it does have to be secure.
Turn the button over and make sure that you have a smooth button front.
Turn the button over so the back is facing you. Take the button backplate and place it over the back of the button piece. There are small letters on the backplate (mine had a “P” and a “R”). The backplate is facing the correct way when these letters are right side up, facing you.
Push the backplate on the back of the button until it clicks on all sides.
Done!! An easy, elegant, covered button that you can use for any project. These No Tools Required Button kit comes in all sizes, so you should be able to find one for your next task!

Keep this in mind- we’ll be using it in a few weeks for two pillows in our Glam Your Bed Pillow Sew-Along!

Linking to these great parties!
