A baby’s first Christmas is special. Getting baby festive for the season is fun, but can also get expensive for items that a baby will only get to wear maybe a handful of times. If you have a few blank baby onesies and a cutting machine, like a Silhouette, creating Christmas Onesies is simple and budget friendly. If you’re not sure where to start, here are 3 easy ways to create Christmas baby onesies with HTV. And be sure to read all the way to the end of the post where a few Silhouette friends and I have joined together to bring you a Christmas-tastic Silhouette giveaway!
HTV is short for heat transfer vinyl, and it can be applied to fabric by using heat from an iron. Pick some up online or at your local arts and crafts store. If you have never used HTV before, you may want to pop over and read my Tips and Tricks for Awesome HTV projects post. It ranks as one of my most popular posts, and many readers who are beginners with HTV have found it useful.
#1 Start with simple shapes. Complicated shapes that require much weeding can be frustrating. By using a simple shape, like this peppermint purchased from the Silhouette Design Store, you can use bright red HTV and a white onesie to make a quick sweet treat onesie that is almost (but not quite!) as sweet as your little one.
Be sure to measure your onesie first.
Use that measurement to base how large to cut the peppermint shape. Cut it with your Silhouette, iron on, and done!
These Christmas tree shapes, also available in the Silhouette Online Design Store, are cute for simple shapes, too!
#2 Use foil HTV. While this shiny HTV may not photograph the best, in person it looks festive and bright! Give baby some bling with foil HTV. It adheres to the onesie just like regular HTV.
Measure the onesie first, cut the shape, and then apply the HTV to the fabric.
#3 Use block letters for easy wording. Skip the intricate cursive letters that can be difficult to cut. Use block letters with whatever festive message that you choose. If cutting a simple word, like “Ho Ho Ho, ” try cutting each word in a different font size and ironing them on diagonally.
I found these baby onesies in my stash from the boys and made all of them in approximately 30 minutes. For the short sleeved onesies, we can layer a coat or cute Christmas button up sweater for warmth.

Love all your onesies but the one with the trees is my favorite.
Cute! I went through a phase a few years ago where altered onesies was my Go To gift for friends with new babies. That was before HTV was big and now that I see how easy it is (and with a friend in the hospital having a baby right this minute!) I may have to go find myself some HTV and get crafting.
Happy to be joining you for the Silhouette Challenge this month.
Cute!!! All the images are adorable… Great idea – Marni @ HaberdasheryFun
