Chalkboard Countdown Ornament

Christmas ornaments are awesome. I like all sort of Christmas ornaments. I like store bought glittery ornaments, keepsake ornaments, handmade ornaments, and photo ornaments. I like them all! One of our traditions in our family is that we purchase an ornament anytime we travel as a family. This lets us reminiscence every Christmas when we are decorating the tree. It’s my favorite holiday tradition. So when I read that Shutterfly had released a holiday card that doubles as a Christmas ornament, I excitedly knew that it was the card that we would be using this year! A special thanks to Shutterfly for providing my holiday cards this year and for sponsoring today’s project!

I’m on the ball, and I’ve already ordered AND received our Christmas cards this year. Want a sneak peek?

We’re so excited for Christmas (and decorating our tree with our keepsake ornaments) that my daughter and I created a Chalkboard Countdown Ornament. Now, instead of her asking me “How long is it until Christmas?”, she is responsible for letting us know! Read on for the chalkboard ornament tutorial, too.

Supplies for the Chalkboard Countdown Ornament (want to see a certain supply? Click on the Amazon affiliate link to see more details about the supplies!):

  • Wood round ornament
  • Washi tape or thin painter’s tape
  • Chalkboard spray paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Chunky glitter paint
  • Red vinyl
  • Scissors
  • Chalk

Use the washi tape to tape out the top of the wood ball ornament. It’s also helpful to remove the ribbon from the top.

Spray paint the ornament according to the directions. Let it dry completely.

Paint the top of the ornament and the sides with the chunky glitter paint. Let dry.

Cut a small rectangle from the red vinyl. If you have a die cutting machine, you can use it. I just hand cut the rectangle using the grid guidelines on the back of the vinyl. Cut an opening in the rectangle.

Adhere the vinyl to the ornament.

Use chalk to write the days until Christmas.

It’s also time to think about ordering your Christmas cards if you haven’t doing so yet! I love, love, love the new Shutterfly Ornament cards. They are a card AND an ornament…what’s not to love?!?!

The cards are double sided and can have multiple photos. I went with the boys’ school photo on the front and my daughter’s photo on the back. In full disclosure, the cards come with the ribbon, but you do have to thread the ribbon through the card yourself. But that’s no problem- enlist the kids to help!

Have fun making our own Chalkboard Countdown Ornament! Are you thinking of ordering the Shutterfly Ornament cards?

My kids would love the chalkboard ornament countdown idea. Buying an ornament when traveling is also our thing. As a matter of fact we just got back from vacation two days ago and we came home w/ ornaments for each of the kids!
