Fried Apple Wedges

I struggle with finger foods for the boys. They have to be foods that are soft enough for them to chew, flavorful enough for them to want to eat, and healthy enough for me to not feel guilty. Since there are three of them, I want a majority of the foods that they eat to be finger foods that they can feed themselves. They tend to get frustrated when they have to wait on me to feed them something like applesauce. The boys’ teeth aren’t quite up to apples yet, so I tried these fun Fried Apple Wedges for them. The cooking process makes the apple soft, but there is still an appetizing crunchy exterior on the apple wedge. Be aware– I did set my fire alarm off on this recipe. That is what happens when I don’t turn on the exhaust fan because I’m trying to listen out for the babies during their nap. I set off the fire alarm and then nap is over completely. Awesome, huh?

The recipe is fairly easy. Peel and core apples, then cut them into wedges. Roll them in cornstarch, followed by dipping them in a cinnamon and spice mixture. Cook in oil until the outside is crispy brown! See the below recipe form for the complete recipe.

Fried Apple Wedges

Ingredients
  • 4 apples, peeled, cored, and cut into wedges no larger than ½"
  • 1 cup cornstarch
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
  • Oil for cooking
Instructions
  1. Roll the apples in the cornstarch until they are covered. Shake off any excess cornstarch.
  2. Heat a large skillet with oil. There should be enough oil in the skillet to cover the apple wedges once they are dropped into the oil.
  3. Mix the sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and pumpkin pie spice in a large bowl.
  4. Dip the cornstarch covered apple wedges in the spice and sugar bowl.
  5. Drop the apple wedges into the hot oil. Cook until the outside begins to turn a crispy caramel brown color.
