A DIY Outdoor Hopscotch

We’ve been working on my daughter’s outdoor play area for a year now. By the time we officially finish, she’ll probably be too old to play on it and the boys will turn it into a fort. Nevertheless, I saw this awesome DIY Outdoor Hopscotch idea over at Happiness is Homemade. She originally read about it at Wee Folk Art who saw it on Read Between the Lines (This is turning into a game of blogging telephone). This easy play area project uses outdoor pavers to create a pretty permanent hopscotch area. Believe me, once I painted these, lugged them around, and coerced the hubby’s buddies to level the ground, this is a permanent fixture.

DIY Outdoor Hopscotch from It Happens in a Blink- Use outdoor pavers to create a custom outdoor hopscotch

Supplies:

  • 10- 12×12 cement pavers- I purchased this at Lowe’s for just a little over a buck a piece
  • Paint- I used Exterior Oil-based Paint for the colors to cover the stone.
  • Spray paint- Once again, use an exterior paint.
  • 12″ Number stencils- Have a cutting die-cutting machine? I used my Cricut to make this part easy!

Lay out plastic or paper in the yard to protect the grass. Place the pavers on top of the protective covering. Paint in desired colors. Let dry completely.

Grab the number stencils. I made mine with the Plantin Schoolbook cartridge on my Cricut. I used regular card stock, but in hindsight a thicker card stock would be better.

Lay a stencil on a stone. Use double sided tape if necessary to adhere it to the stone. Spray paint the number.

Lift up the stencil. Let dry.

I chose a spot near the play set. My hubby and his buddies dug out about an inch in the ground x the length of the hopscotch. I didn’t want the hopscotch the have a “lip” and be a tripping hazard if the kids are running around the yard.

My daughter unfortunately inherited my clumsiness, but she likes the hopscotch. I like easy and cheap projects! :)
