I would like to start off with a confession: I am in my thirties, and I have never watched The Jungle Book. I’m not really sure what happened in my childhood that made me miss out on a family movie classic. So when I found out that Disney’s The Jungle Book was being released in a special Blu-Ray/Combo Pack Diamond Edition on at Walmart on February 11, 2014, I was excited to plan a special #JungleFresh movie night for my daughter.

I like building anticipation for family events, so I brought my daughter with me to Walmart to purchase the movie. Walmart is the only place where I could get a  Jungle Book Lunch Box with my purchase of the Diamond Edition– a great added bonus. We found the movie on an end cap in the Electronics department in a special display.

And then we went on the hunt for movie watching snacks. At first my daughter was all about the popcorn and chips, but I had a different plan for us. After all, if we are watching The Jungle Book, shouldn’t we go #JungleFresh? One of my favorite things to do as a parent is taking my daughter through the fruit and vegetable department. It’s like all of her senses are alive as she picks up different fruits and veggies. We spent fifteen minutes in the produce department while deciding which fruits and vegetables would be awesome for our movie night snacks.

Fruit and Yogurt Pitas

These are so much fun! By using mini pitas/flatbreads, these fit perfectly into the hands of kids. And the little ones will get a kick out of eating fruit and yogurt on a “sandwich”, as my daughter said.

Ingredients:

  • Vanilla Yogurt
  • Fresh Raspberries
  • Fresh Diced Strawberries
  • Fresh Blueberries (Our local Walmart was out of fresh blueberries, so we chose a frozen variety. But fresh is always the best!
  • Mini pita pockets or fold-over flat breads

Maybe you have a little one who prefers veggies? Or, in my case, I’m trying to find any possible way to sneak vegetables in her and convince her that they really are yummy and cool to eat. A few simple variations on the Fruit and Yogurt Pita will yield Kid Friendly Veggie Pitas.

In addition to these yummy pitas, I also laid out ready-to-eat fresh fruits like bananas and clementines. My daughter helped to make these pitas, and her inner chef made an appearance! It’s much more fun to bond and prepare for a family movie night over making pitas instead of opening a bag of chips!

Want to add a few fun decorations to the mix? I made these leaves and bananas from craft foam that I found in the crafts department at Walmart. For the bananas, I actually traced bananas that I had purchased. I made the leaves by cutting a leaf stencil from my Plantin Schoolbook Cricut Cartridge, then cutting a foam leaf and felt leaf  and gluing them together.

For one last craft, we also made these Easy Foam Cup Cozies! Okay, so I made these because they look just plain cool, but they do have a purpose! We used these as cup identifiers. Instead of writing on names on the cups with markers, we each picked out a different pattern for our cups.

Supplies:

  • Animal printed craft foam
  • Scissors
  • Pen
  • Tape
  • Standard Size Plastic Cup
  • Cozy Template

Print off the Cozy Template and cut it out. Trace it on to the BACK side of the foam.

Wrap it around the cup. For a temporary version, simply secure with tape. For a more permanent version, secure with glue.

Enough prep! Let’s have a family movie night with The Jungle Book! We had a blast at ours, and I have to say that I truly liked the movie. We have been singing “Bear Necessities” for days!
