Fleece Silhouette Envelope Pillow Cover

Ok, so I completely thought that this pillow cover was an excellent idea. After the Secret Notes Pillow Cover, I had the notion to make a sweet Silhouette Pillow Cover in coordinating colors. Since my daughter is obsessed with the Secret Notes cover, I just knew she would love this Fleece Silhouette Envelope Pillow Cover. Well, I was wrong. Apparently having your face on a pillow is “not cool, Mom.” I happen to think it’s cute. And since it’s made with fleece, it is also comfortable. And classic. So there.

Make an easy envelope style pillow cover

Supplies:

  • Pink fleece for pillow
  • Black material for Silhouette
  • Thread
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine
  • Pins

The pillow cover in itself is a quick sew. Last week, I showed how to make your own pillow inserts. Be sure to check that post out if you need a pillow to cover with this cute silhouette!

Begin by cutting the material. For this cover, I am making it for a pillow insert that is 20″x20″. It may seem that I am cutting the material pieces too snug, but I want the cover to be snug. A loose cover looks sloppy, so there is a fine line between too tight and perfect. Here are my cutting dimensions for this pillow:

  1. Front Pink Fleece Panel- cut material piece 20.25″x20.25″
  2. Back Pink Fleece Panel #1- 20.25″x 11″ (the 11″ came from halving the 20″ measurement and adding an inch)
  3. Back Pink Fleece Panel #2- 20.25″x 14″ (the 14″ came from halving the 20″ measurement and adding four inches)
  4. Silhouette- I had leftover Silhouette cut outs from the Child’s Silhouette Quilt that I made last year. In short, I took a side picture of my daughter then enlarged it in a word document and changed it to black/white. I then printed it on a standard home printer and cut it out. I use this as a template to cut out the black Silhouette piece.

Position your child’s silhouette in the middle of the Front Pink Fleece Panel and pin. You can use a fusible material underneath if desired, but I didn’t have any around. Carefully sew around the silhouette with a zigzag stitch.

For Back Pink Fleece Panel #1, press under 1/4″ on one of the short sides. Normally I would fold the raw edge up again to have a finished edge, but when working with fleece this can get bulky. So I only pressed the 1/4″ and pinned. (Remember fleece doesn’t ravel like a cotton). Sew this in place. Set aside.

For Back Pink Fleece Panel #2, press under 1″ on one of the short sides. Press and pin. Sew in place along pinned edge. Sew again at the outer folded edge to create a polished look.

Place Silhouette Panel on a flat surface, right side up. Pin Back Pink Fleece Panel #2 to the Silhouette Panel, right sides together. Pin Back Pink Fleece Panel #1 to Silhouette Panel, right sides together. Both of the Back Pink Panels will overlap!! Sew the panels together with a 1/2″ seam allowance.

Clip corners and threads and turn the cover right sides out.

Place it on the pillow and tell your little ones that nothing says love like their face on a pillow.
