Skinny Tie Onesies with Fabric Paint Embellishment

The Tie Onesie is all over blogland, so this concept is nothing new. I’m not sure who started the whole fad. I first saw it over at Crap I’ve Made. I like the tie onesies because it’s easy to spruce up an average onesie.

My past projects for fabric painting week have been all about the painted shirt, but today we’re going to add a little additional step in there- applique. The final fabric paint step will add a 3D look to the tie. Never used fabric paint before? Check out my Tips for Fabric Painting {here}. Oh yeah, here’s a sneak peak of the tie in three ways (how many people can say that??).

Supplies

  • Plain onesie
  • Fabric scrap for tie
  • Skinny Tie pattern
  • Fusible fabric interfacing or Heat N Bond
  • Thread/sewing machine
  • Tulip Fabric Dimensional Paint

Print out the Skinny Tie Pattern. Cut it out from the fabric scrap and from the interfacing (or Heat N Bond).

At this point, the ideal next step is to pull out the Heat N Bond tie to attach the fabric tie to the onesie. However, I didn’t have any and had no way to get to the store to buy any. So I used regular interfacing. I ironed it onto the tie and then pinned the tie to the onesie. Either way, the point is to get another layer behind the tie to reinforce it.

Pin the tie to the onesie. Make sure it is centered.

Use a zigzag stitch to sew around the tie perimeter.

Take a coordinating color of Tulip Fabric Dimensional Paint and add some 3D effects to the tie. Play around and make it fun! Let the paint dry thoroughly.

To “puff up” the paint, heat seal it with an iron.

Now snap away with the pics!
